Denny’s scheduled to close 150 restaurants

    denny's, ocala news, ocala post

Denny’s has announced major changes to its hours and plans to close at least 150 locations.

A Denny’s spokesperson said 50 locations are set to close by the end of 2024. The remaining restaurants will close in 2025.

The company is targeting underperforming restaurants that are considered to be weighing down the company’s profit margins.

Many of the locations are old and deteriorating. The company said the locations that are falling apart are not bringing in enough revenue to consider remodeling.

In addition to closing multiple locations, Denny’s said the company will no longer force franchise owners to be open 24-7.

A Denny’s executive told Ocala Post that as of October 24, the company has not released the list of restaurants that will shutter.

Company misled applicants who applied for job on Indeed

Florida — A California-based company is using the lack of legislation in Florida to prey on potential employees with help wanted listings on indeed.com.

The company, Tetra Tech, located at 3475 East Foothill Boulevard Pasadena, California posted a job listing on Indeed titled “Debris Monitor” following Hurrcane’s Helene and Milton.

The job was for any county impacted by the storms.

In part, the job description reads, “Tetra Tech, Inc. specializes in recovering communities after being significantly impacted by disasters or weather events. We are currently hiring for Debris Monitors to help monitor debris removal.”

Additionally, the company promises $1,300 per week plus overtime.

The main listing, as seen in the below screenshot, shows “from $1,300” per week.

On October 19, hundreds of applicants walked into the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota in hopes of landing a job with a livable salary. Some of the applicants drove 2.5 hours for the interview.

After waiting more than an hour in line, candidates learned that the initial job listing was one hundred percent misleading.

When called into the interviewing room, Tetra Tech interviewers dropped the bomb and informed candidates that the job actually pays $13.00 per hour with mandatory overtime.

Candidates must use their own vehicle to follow debris removal trucks from location to location and there is no mileage reimbursement or allowance for wear and tear on a personal vehicle.

A candidate would need to work 70-plus hours a week to achieve the advertised salary, No exceptions. Candidates are told that if they do not adhere to the terms after being hired they “would be cut.”

In California, it is illegal to post a job on Indeed with a misleading salary.

Florida does not currently have legislation in place that would protect applicants from being misled, and a reasonable person could conclude that Tetra Tech certainly knows this.

A second company, True North Emergency Management, based out of Texas, posted a similar job listing for a “debris monitor.”

In addition to offering a low wage with massive hours, True North Emergency Management took it a step further and stated, “Successful candidates will be provided FREE unpaid training and will work as part of a team accurately monitoring and documenting the debris collection and removal activities.”

It is illegal to withhold earnings for training and meetings in Florida.

Candidates say that until Florida has the necessary legislation in place, job applicants will continue to face this type of misleading tactic which preys on those who are desperate for a job.

Driver rescued after crashing into pond

    1

Ocala, Florida – On Thursday, Oct. 3, Ocala Fire Rescue responded to reports of a vehicle in a pond within the Fore Ranch subdivision at 9:21 p.m.

The calls came after residents witnessed a vehicle accelerate through an entry gate, strike the controlled access unit, and veer off the road into a retention pond.

Engine 6 and Rescue 6 arrived at the pond behind SW 54th Circle to find Ocala Police Department officers breaking the glass of a compact SUV immersed in water. Firefighters approached the vehicle and helped the officers extricate its sole occupant.

The driver, who was suffering a medical emergency, was carried to a stretcher, evaluated, and transported to the hospital as a trauma alert.

    No other injuries were reported.

Battalion Chief 11, a Safety Officer, and Marion County Fire Rescue also responded.

Letter to editor: Response to proposed 5G tower installation in Kingsland Country neighborhood

    cell tower, zoning, ocala news

My name is Maiko Mottie, I’m a resident and board member of the HOA in the Kingsland Country neighborhood in Ocala, Florida.

I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of significant concern to our community regarding the planned installation of a 5G tower in the middle of our residential area.

The decision to install this tower was made without the knowledge or approval of our HOA, and many residents are deeply concerned about the potential impacts this could have on our health, property values, and the overall character of our neighborhood. Numerous studies have suggested potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to cell towers, including headaches, sleep disturbances, and more severe long-term concerns such as cancer.

To give you a better understanding, here are some resources that discuss the potential health risks of living near cell towers:

    1. American Cancer Society: Cellular Phone Towers – This article from the American Cancer Society discusses the potential risks associated with radiation from cell towers. https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/radiation-exposure/cellular-phone-towers.html

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health – This peer-reviewed journal article discusses the associations between cell tower proximity and health impacts. https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/17/14/4959 Despite these concerns, there has been a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, and many residents feel their voices have not been heard. We believe this issue deserves more attention and are reaching out to you in the hope that you could help us raise awareness by covering this story. Our goal is to ensure that the community is fully informed and that local officials are held accountable to the concerns of the people they serve.

    Thank you for your time.

Marion issues health alert for blue-green algae toxins

Blue Green Algae, ocala news, ocala post

Ocala, Florida — The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) has issued a health alert for harmful blue-green algae toxins in Silver Glen Springs. The alert is in response to a water sample taken on September 12, 2024. The public should exercise caution in and around Silver Glen Springs.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

    ·         Do not drink, swim, wade, use personal watercraft, or come into contact with waters with visible bloom.

    ·         Wash your skin and clothing with soap and water if you have any contact with algae, or discolored or water that smells unpleasant.

    ·         Keep pets and livestock away from the area to avoid any contact with water. Waters where algae blooms are present are not safe for animals. Pets and livestock should use an alternative water source when algae blooms are present.

    ·         Do not cook or clean dishes with water contaminated by algae blooms. Boiling the water will not eliminate toxins.

    ·         Eating fillets from healthy fish caught in freshwater lakes experiencing blooms is safe. Rinse fish fillets with tap or bottled water, throw out the guts, and cook fish thoroughly.

    ·         Do not eat shellfish in waters with algae blooms.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and partners collect algae samples from reported bloom locations. After samples are analyzed at their laboratory, the toxin results can be viewed on Protecting Florida Together or on DEP’s Algal Bloom Dashboard.

    What is Blue-Green Algae?

Blue-green algae are a type of bacteria that is common in Florida’s freshwater environments. A bloom occurs when the rapid growth of algae leads to an accumulation of individual cells that discolor water and often produce floating mats that emit unpleasant odors.

Blue-green algae blooms can also appear as scum, foam, or paint on the surface of the water in various colors. To learn more about the appearance of algae blooms, visit Protecting Florida Together.

Some environmental factors that contribute to blue-green algae blooms are sunny days, warm water temperatures, still water conditions, and excess nutrients. Blooms can appear year-round but are more frequent in summer and fall. Many types of blue-green algae can produce toxins. Blue-green algae may not always be visible as a bloom, but it can still be present in the water.

    Is Blue-Green Algae Harmful?

Blue-green algae can produce toxins, which can be harmful to human and pets as well as ecosystems, including fish and other aquatic animals. Sensitive individuals (e.g., children, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised) may still be at risk even at low concentrations and should avoid any exposure.

For additional information on the potential health effects of algae blooms, visit the Florida Department of Health’s harmful algae blooms webpage.

Where Can I Find Current Water Status Information?

Current information about Florida’s water quality status and public health notifications for harmful algae blooms and beach conditions is available at Protecting Florida Together.

You can subscribe to receive notifications when water quality changes in your area.

Where Can I Report Issues Related to Algae Blooms?

    ·         Algae Blooms: DEP monitors algae blooms and collects samples for analysis. Blooms can be reported to DEP online or by calling toll-free at 1-855-305-3903.

    ·         Human Health: Report symptoms from exposure to harmful algae bloom or any aquatic toxin to the Florida Poison Information Center by calling 800-222-1222 to speak to a poison specialist.

    ·         Animal Health: Contact your veterinarian if you believe your pet has become ill after consuming or having contact with blue-green algae-contaminated water.

    ·         Fish Kills: Dead, diseased, or abnormally behaving fish or wildlife should be reported to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission online or at 800-636-0511.

If you have other health questions or concerns about blue-green algae, please call DOH-Marion at 352-629-0137.

    Rabies alert in Marion County

Ocala, Florida — The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) is issuing a rabies alert in Marion County in response to a confirmed case of rabies in a cat that was killed in the Citra area off NE 30th Court on September 10, 2024.

DOH-Marion is monitoring rabies among wild animals in the area. All residents and visitors should know that rabies is currently present in the wild animal population.

People and domestic animals should always avoid physical contact with wild animals (e.g., raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes), which carry a higher risk of human exposure and a need for rabies post-exposure treatment. If you are exposed to rabies, receiving appropriate treatment after exposure will protect you from the risk of rabies.

This rabies alert is for 60 days and includes the following boundaries in Marion County:

    ·         Northern boundary: NE 175th Street Road

    ·         Southern boundary: East Highway 316

    ·         Eastern boundary: NE 44th Ave.

    ·         Western boundary: North U.S. Highway 301

Take the following precautions to prevent rabies exposure:

    ·         Immunize your pets and livestock based on your veterinarian’s recommended schedule.

    ·         Keep pets under direct supervision and on a leash, and keep livestock secured on your property. If an animal bites your pet or livestock, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately and contact Marion County Animal Services at 352-671-8700.

    ·         Avoid contact with wild or stray animals. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract them with outdoor pet food, open garbage cans, or other sources of food. If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, seek medical attention, and report the injury to DOH-Marion by calling 352-629-0137.

    ·         Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home; instead, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

    ·         Call your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood. Contact Marion County Animal Services at 352-671-8700.

    ·         Prevent wildlife, including bats, from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, schools, and other similar areas where they might come in contact with people and pets.

Duke Energy crews assist in power restoration in New Orleans

    0

Florida — On September 12, approximately 200 Duke Energy Florida crews and contractors arrived in New Orleans to help restore power following Hurricane Francine.

Duke crews included lineworkers, vegetation management, support staff, and a mobile command center.

The Duke Energy contingency is supporting Entergy in Louisiana.

The crews were deployed from throughout the state of Florida.

According to Duke Energy, this is part of their mutual assistance program, which allows Duke to assist neighboring utility companies when they need it most.

A Duke representative said, “During Florida hurricanes, utility crews travel from as far as Canada to help restore power for our customers. We are grateful to return the favor during Hurricane Francine.”

Homeless camp dismantled by authorities, lawsuit could now be filed

The Citrus County government is cracking down, and criminalizing homelessness.

Donna Darwin A.K.A Donna Collins, a homeless woman who has been staying at a homeless camp located at 4765 Yale Lane in Hernando with several other homeless individuals, was forced to leave the property.

The property owner, who is now deceased, left the property to his son. The son permitted Donna to set up camp on the private property.

However, authorities, including Citrus County Code Enforcement, initiated court proceedings and said it didn’t matter if she had permission.

Code Enforcement claims that because there are no structures, electricity, or running water individuals cannot occupy the private property where a tent had been erected.

Compliance Officer Alan C. Jonason filed paperwork with the county that deemed the property unsafe.

Authorities also started rumors that those who lived in the camp were heavy drug users. Those rumors were never proven.

Those in the camp said that they had been harassed from day one.

“Homelessness has become a crime in this state,” said Collins. “We haven’t bothered anyone. It is everyone else harassing us.”

The court threatened hefty fines and possibly jail time if those on the property did not leave.

Local churches stepped in and helped those on the property clean up and vacate before the deadline.

Those who helped said the camp was kept fairly neat and for the most part, the view was blocked from the street.

Many say the county had no grounds to evict because it is private property and Collins had permission. Authorities disagreed and moved forward with the legal proceedings.

The new law is only supposed to apply to homeless individuals who openly camp on public property, not private property.

Many say that Collins may now have a federal lawsuit against the County. A similar lawsuit was filed against the City of Ocala. The city lost that lawsuit.

Those evicted from the private property are now looking for a more secluded area in the woods and out of the public eye.

Woman laughed, smiled for mugshot after DUI arrest

Cobarris, ocala news, ocala post, dui
    Cobarris

Ocala, Florida — On August 27, 2024, an Ocala woman was arrested and accused of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Even more shocking, she had two young children in the car.

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by Ocala Post, the investigation began after authorities received a 911 call from someone reporting a reckless driver on East Highway 40. The caller told dispatch the driver was weaving in and out of lanes.

Eventually, a deputy saw the maroon Kia sedan traveling eastbound on the highway into oncoming traffic, at which time the deputy made a U-turn and began following the Kia.

The deputy reported that he observed the driver, later identified as 22-year-old Celeste Cobarris, cross over her lane multiple times and pass cars in a no-passing zone.

At that time, the deputy activated his lights and siren and attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 15000 block of E Highway 40 in Silver Springs.

According to authorities, the driver continued eastbound on Highway 40 and ran a red light as she turned northbound onto NE Highway 314 A.

Cobarris eventually stopped in a nearby gas station parking lot.

When the deputy made contact with the driver, he also discovered two young children inside the vehicle. One of the children was walking around on the inside of the Kia.

The deputy reported that Cobarris had signs of impairment, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and the strong odor of alcohol.

When asked for her license, she handed the deputy a pack of air fresheners.

The report also states that during the traffic stop, Cobarris attempted to pick up the child from the car seat and attempted to breastfeed even after being told no.

When the deputy asked Cobarris to return the child to the car seat, she dropped the boy on his head.

Cobarris eventually admitted to drinking and failed her roadside sobriety tests.

She was charged with two counts of Child Neglect and DUI with Persons Under 18 in the Vehicle.

She is being held on a $6,000 bond.

After being told her charges she laughed. She also smiled for her mugshot photo.

Cobarris has a previous arrest for Domestic Battery.

More Red Lobster locations to close, P.F. Chang’s, Damola Adamolekun, new CEO

In May of 2024, Red Lobster announced it was closing several locations across the United States one week after it announced the company was filing for bankruptcy.

Now, the seafood restaurant has announced it will close even more locations. A recent court filing shows that the company is rejecting the leases of 23 locations by Saturday, August 31, joining the more than 100 restaurants that Red Lobster closed earlier this summer.

This comes after the company received a $100 million loan from Fortress Credit Corp, a New York-based company.

On Monday, Fortress said it will be purchasing Red Lobster and will make former chief executive of P.F. Chang’s, Damola Adamolekun, Red Lobster’s new CEO once the chain exits bankruptcy proceedings.

A spokesperson, said, “Gross Mismanagement, competition, inflation, and other factors brought down Red Lobster.”

Thai Union, a global seafood supplier, purchased the majority of Red Lobster’s shares in 2020 and filed for bankruptcy four years later in May.

“The environment became toxic under Thai Union,” said a spokesperson. The spokesperson went on to say, “Thai Union had no business managing the company. They made endless shrimp a permanent menu item and Red Lobster lost 11 million on the deal when the cost of seafood skyrocketed.”

Bloomberg reported in April that the restaurant was heavily considering Chapter 11 bankruptcy to renegotiate some leases and address other long-term contracts and rising labor costs.

The second week of May 2024, Liquidator TAGeX Brands announced it was holding one of the largest online restaurant auctions ever held due to Red Lobster restaurants closing in 21 states, including Florida.

In March, ALDI announced it entered into and finalized a definitive agreement to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket as part of a larger divestiture of Southeastern Grocers to various entities.

The acquisition continues the growth of ALDI, expanding its ability to serve the region
with great products at the lowest possible prices.

“Like ALDI, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the Southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. “The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills. The transaction supports our long-term growth strategy across the United States, including plans to add 120 new stores nationwide this year to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end.”

Despite many retailers shuttering stores due to economic conditions, ALDI is doubling down on expansion plans, supporting its position as one of the fastest-growing grocers in the country.

The Southeast-focused acquisition includes approximately 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

The three Florida Winn-Dixie locations currently scheduled for conversion include:

    • Winn-Dixie located at 6902 S. Florida Ave. in Lakeland
    • Winn-Dixie located at 23200 Front Beach Road in Panama City Beach
    • Winn-Dixie located at 3157 West 23rd St. in Panama City
    • Deltona (address unknown)

Aldi representatives say these locations are just the beginning.

Permits have also been pulled in Tampa and Jacksonville.

So far, Aldi has not announced any plans for Winn-Dixies in Marion County.

However, Aldi CEO Jason Hart, said, “For those stores we do not convert, our intention is that these continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores.”

Winn-Dixie “buy one get one free” scam

Customers say this grocery store is getting out of control with prices

    publix, ocala news, ocala post

Florida natives know the phrase “shopping is a pleasure” is associated with entering the front doors and heading straight to the bakery counter for their free chocolate chip cookie for their children.

However, “shopping is a pleasure” has been overshadowed by Publix customer’s increased spending but getting less food.

While Winn-Dixie is also expensive, Publix is by far one of the most expensive grocery stores. Most shop there because of the friendliness, cleanliness, and the fact that they typically have more than one register open.

When does the customer draw the line and turn to stores like Aldi?

Despite the enormous increase in prices associated with shopping at Publix, the grocer released its annual earnings results, announcing earnings for the fiscal year ended December 2023, were $4.3 billion, an increase of 49 percent or $2.9 billion in 2022.

Meanwhile, other stores are closing, selling, or filing for bankruptcy.

The company also announced this week that they plan to open at least 20 new stores by the end of the year. (See list below)

Publix is charging nearly $8.00 for a box of cereal.

Six Boneless skinless chicken breasts are approximately $26.00 a pack, while Aldi charges $12.00 for the same pack/weight.

Mayo is approximately $8.00 a 30oz jar for the Publix brand.

According to financial analysts, to not struggle, Floridians would need to earn $100,000 per year to live comfortably.

    ocala news, ocala post, teachers

Ocala – HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, and the Public Education Foundation of Marion County (PEFMC) announced today the launch of Thank a Teacher, a partnership to celebrate dedicated educators.

Each month, sponsor HCA Florida Healthcare, which operates HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, will provide a winning teacher $250, highlighting the teacher on social media.

“We are truly appreciative of the partnership with HCA Florida Healthcare for providing this opportunity for parents, community members, and students to nominate and acknowledge educators who have a positive influence on student’s lives every day,” said Meghan Magamoll, executive director of the Public Education Foundation of Marion County. “Teachers deserve praise all year long, not just during the dedicated ‘Teacher Appreciation Week,’ and this is our chance as a community to come together and Thank A Teacher.”

Nominations start today, August 16, using the form on the Public Education Foundation of Marion County’s website. Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, students, families, and staff members are encouraged to share their stories about a particular teacher’s inspiring actions, supportive words, creative lessons, or just their overall positive impact. Teachers selected as a result of nominations from the public will receive a special email containing those heartfelt messages.

“We are thankful for the continued partnership with the Public Education Foundation of Marion County and look forward to helping students and parents recognize the impact teachers make on the students and our community,” stated Alan Keesee, CEO of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.

Winners will be announced each month’s end during the school year. The teacher’s colleagues also will be treated to a meal as a thank you for their collective contributions toward our students’ success.

The only thing left to be answered by Marion County is, “Who are you going to nominate?” Go to the Thank a Teacher webpage to submit a nomination.

Thinking about renting? You might want to avoid Action Rental Management Realty

Florida — Today, rentals are hard to come by and when you find one most who are looking tend to “jump” on the opportunity.

Does the property have an Action Rental Management Realty sign out front? You might want to think twice before dialing their number.

Action Rental is accused of illegally withholding thousands of dollars in deposits and rent monies from clients and tenants. The company is also accused of being predatory.

Hundreds of unsuspecting renters have used the company not knowing that their lives would soon become a nightmare.

Stories of clogged sinks, broken cabinets, backed-up sewage, faulty wiring, and failure to return deposits are very common with the company.

For years, residents have complained to Action Rental Management Inc. about sewage backing up into sinks, dishwashers, and toilets at a Lecanto apartment building managed by Action Rental.

For years, the landlords ignored the problem.

Rather than address the issue, which was discovered to be a faulty drain field, Action Rental repeatedly had the septic pumped. However, residents say that the septic company had told the landlords on multiple occasions that the drain field needed to be replaced.

Even after pumping the septic, especially if it rained, toilets, sinks, and dishwashers continually backed up into the apartments. Sometimes, it would take days for the water to drain.

One of the tenants reported that the sink was backed up for 4 days before Action Rental sent out a plumber.

While on-site, the plumber informed the tenant that Forestview Apartments had been an issue for years.

Two years after the initial complaint the drain field was finally replaced.

The biggest complaint renters have is about the owner of Action Rental, Marie Hager, refusing to return deposits.

Sarah P. said, “The owner of this company is appalling at best. No class or professionalism and is callous with how she handles prospective renters.”

The complaints about Hager refusing to return deposits are in the dozens.

Tenants say it doesn’t matter if a renter vacates an apartment and leaves it in perfect condition or if they hire professional cleaners, “Hager always finds an excuse to keep a deposit.”

Ocala Post was provided with pictures from several tenants and the pictures show backed-up sinks and broken cabinets. Additionally, photos show immaculate apartments that were professionally cleaned upon move-out.

Joy P., Said, “Not recommended to anyone, between action Rental and the owner of the mobile home, it was an awful experience. I rented the home for 5 years, never late. There were no damages, even after he assured me he would see to it that Marie would return the deposit. They refused to give my deposit back.”

Like tenants, property owners have also complained about Hager illegally withholding rent monies.

Dave, a property owner, said, “Poor Communication with clients. I have been a client for approximately 10 years. Throughout the entire experience, I have felt trapped with [Action Realty]. Because of the way the contract is written, the only time you can get out of the contract is if there is no tenant occupying the house. That finally happened for me. I was not notified that the tenant had notified them that they were moving out at the end of [the month]. I was expecting my portion of the rent check to arrive in the mail. [Two weeks had passed] and the check had not arrived (not unusual) so I waited a couple more days before I contacted Action Rental Management to ask what was going on. I have sent about 10 emails over the past 8 weeks trying to resolve the problems to no avail. On July 10th the President of the company (Marie Hagar) called me on the phone, she was yelling and screaming about how dare I say that they ignore my emails, that I have no reason to complain because I keep my property in such poor condition, and how sick and tired she was with owners like me who are always whining about how poor they are and that they need their money right now!! This company has held my property hostage by not returning the keys to me making it impossible for me to hire a new property manager. Also, they still have not paid me $1330.00 they owe me.”

Again, this is just one of dozens of complaints by not just tenants but property owners who have hired Hager’s company.

John H., said, “If you do not mind being treated like a child and dealing with the arrogance of the owner, you like having your deposit withheld, then this is the place for you.”

Tanya D, said, “Why bother cleaning the apartment and stressing over the deposit if you are not going to get it back anyway? Leve it and make them work for it.”

Even more disturbing, Ocala Post discovered that Action Rental allows pest control techs to enter properties without giving the tenant 24-hour notice.

Ocala Post reviewed an Action Rental contract and it does not make mention of pest control techs being given keys to the property.

One tenant described that she had no idea techs had been entering her apartment and for months felt like sometimes when she returned home some of her underwear would be missing. She also reported a missing bra and a pillow.

Ocala Post reached out to Action Realty during our investigation. However, the company refused to answer any questions.

Ocala Post also reached out to the Federal Trade Commission. A follow-up story will be published once they respond.

    Man arrested, Mom’s spaghetti

mom's spaghetti, ocala news, florida news

Florida — An Italian dinner lands a Florida man in jail on charges of Battery and resisting arrest.

According to police, On Sunday, shortly before 8 p.m., officers were called to a St. Petersburg home on Wahoo Drive after an argument turned “physical.”

Police said that Anthony Fiacco was having dinner with his mother when she said something that offended him.

Fiacco then took Mom’s spaghetti and threw it at his mother. It appears he lost himself in the moment.

The police report stated that Fiacco “doused his mother with spaghetti and sauce. It was on her shirt, body, and in her hair.”

Fiacco ran from the scene but later returned to the home. He was found hiding in the backyard bushes.

According to reports, an officer yelled, “Police, show me your hands.” Fiacco tried to run off again but was tackled and taken into custody. His feet did, in fact, fail him.

He was booked into the Pinellas County jail and released the next day.

    No vomit was involved.

Duke Energy says they restored power for 90% of customers within 24 hours

duke energy rate hike, ocala news, marion county news, ocala post

Duke Energy Florida said they rapidly restored power for 90% of its customers within 24 hours after Hurricane Debby made landfall in the Big Bend.

Crews continue to work tirelessly to restore power in areas hardest hit, and the company said they will not stop until every customer has power.

Duke Energy Florida anticipates restoring 95% of customers in Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, though many customers will be restored before then.

Hurricane Debby brought strong winds, heavy rainfall and widespread flooding to Florida. The company has relocated crews to concentrate on the hardest hit areas as they require additional work to complete restoration.

The estimated time of restoration for 95% of the remaining customers in the hardest hit areas is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

The remaining customers in the hardest hit areas include:

    • Alachua County
    • Columbia County
    • Dixie County
    • Gilchrist County
    • Hamilton County
    • Jefferson County
    • Lafayette County
    • Madison County
    • Suwannee County
    • Taylor County
    • Wakulla County

The company continues to work alongside its neighboring utilities, cooperatives and municipalities served by Duke Energy Florida transmission lines and substations to ensure estimated times of restoration are coordinated.

    Flood and meter box damage

For customers whose homes or businesses were flooded, Duke Energy cannot reconnect power until the electrical system has been inspected by a licensed electrician. If there is damage, an electrician will need to make repairs and obtain verification from the local building inspection authority before power can be restored.

If the meter box is pulled away from a customer’s house or mobile home service pole and power is not being received, the homeowner is responsible for contacting an electrician to reattach the meter box and/or provide a permanent fix. In some instances, an electrical inspection may be required by the county before Duke Energy can reconnect service. An electrician can advise customers on the next steps.

Duke Energy will continue to update customers through emails, text messages, phone calls, social media, and its website, including the outage map.

“Duke Energy is grateful for our customers’ continued patience and understanding as our crews have been working around the clock to get the lights back on,” said Todd Fountain, Duke Energy Florida storm director. “We are proud of our progress so far, but we remain laser-focused on safely restoring power for every last customer, going above and beyond to demonstrate our commitment to the communities we serve.”

    Downed power lines are hazardous

Duke Energy reminds customers and the public to stay away from downed power lines that have fallen or are sagging and to consider all power lines – and trees, limbs or anything in contact with power lines – energized and dangerous.

If a power line falls across a vehicle you are in, stay in the car. If you MUST get out of the car due to a fire or other immediate life-threatening situation, try to jump clear of the car and land on both feet. Be sure that no part of your body is touching the car when your feet touch the ground.

    Customers using generators

If you use a generator at home to provide power until your service is restored, please watch for utility crews and turn the generator off when crews are in your area. The electrical load on the power lines can be dangerous for crews making repairs. The excess electricity created by a generator can feed back onto the electric lines, severely injuring a line technician who might be working on a power line, believing it to be de-energized.

For more information, customers can sign up online for phone and email alerts or text REG to 57801 for text alerts, bookmark the outage map, and download the mobile app for updates.
