Ocala photographer believes monkey was harmed by UF researchers

The Rhesus Macaques monkey photographed by McGeorge.

Ocala, Florida — Graham McGeorge has spent the last five years photographing a feral colony of Rhesus Macaques, a type of monkey, along the Silver River in Ocala, Florida. But for the past several weeks he has been looking for answers.

On February 20, Ocala Post was contacted by Karen Kline from Negotiations Are Over, in reference to a particular monkey McGeorge had been photographing.

Kline stated that on January 31, 2015, McGeorge had stumbled upon a monkey wearing a GPS collar, which appeared to be constricting the monkey’s neck and rubbing it raw.

Concerned for the well-being of the monkey, McGeorge said he immediately contacted Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He was then referred to the University of Florida, because that is who placed the tracker on the monkey.

Kline said after contacting UF, she and McGeorge were provided with conflicting information about the monkey. She said that’s when they reached out to Ocala Post.

Ocala Post then contacted UF and inquired about the situation.

UF Assistant Vice President , Janine Sikes, released the following statement:

“The University of Florida is studying the habitat use and movement patterns of the Rhesus Macaques in Silver Springs Park. A single macaque was collared in December as part of this study. UF researchers were notified February 2, about the concerns of Mr. McGeorge. The researchers immediately sought advice from their project veterinarian, who recommended the collar be removed. The very next day, UF sent a signal to a satellite, which enabled the collar to fall off the monkey. That process took a few days, but we confirmed that the collar was no longer on the animal on Sunday, February 8.

Other than the abrasion caused by the collar, the macaque appeared in good health. The monkey was observed with her group, feeding, grooming, and behaving normally.”

However, McGeorge does not believe that the monkey had only been wearing the collar for approximately two months; he believes it was much longer.

He said he wanted proof that the collar had been removed, but alleges that UF refused to supply proof.

” Unfortunately, their past history does not lead one to believe they are a reputable organization,” McGeorge said.

McGeorge said he hasn’t seen the monkey since the incident, but will keep looking for answers.

Researchers said they will continue to observe the animals in the Silver River area.

SWAT raids Super 8 Motel room

Ocala, Florida — On Wednesday, the Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team (UDEST) obtained a search warrant and raided room number 149 of the Super 8 Motel located at 3924 West Silver Springs Boulevard. As a result, two drug dealers were arrested on a variety of drug and gun charges.

In January, drug agents opened an investigation into an organized group who were utilizing numerous motel rooms at different motels throughout the City of Ocala to sell their drugs. The use of random motel rooms throughout the city was an intentional security measure used by the criminals to minimize the risk of being caught by law enforcement.

Early in the investigation, drug agents discovered that Santini Chishlom was the ring leader and the main drug supplier for the group. Drug agents were able to make several controlled cocaine purchases from Chishlom, which ultimately enabled drug agents to obtain a search warrant for his motel room.

When members of the Ocala Police Department’s SWAT team deployed on the motel room to serve the search warrant Wednesday afternoon, the occupants of the room refused to open the door, at which time forcible entry was made.

Upon entering the room, SWAT members confronted and secured Santini Chisholm, 33, Calvin Willis Jr., 30, and Jaquan Donaldson.

A search of the room revealed two (2) handguns, a bullet proof vest, ammunition, $2,400 in cash, cocaine, crack cocaine, MDMA, marijuana, and an assortment of drug related paraphernalia. Drug agents also discovered that the subjects were in the process of manufacturing (converting) cocaine into crack cocaine when the SWAT team entered the room.

Jaquan Donaldson was released from the scene and was not charged with a crime. However, a white Dodge Charger, which was rented by Donaldson under his name, was released back to the rental agency because Donaldson was allowing Santini Chishlom and Calvin Willis to utilize it for their illegal drug sales.

Santini Chishlom and Calvin Willis are both convicted felons. Santini Chishlom was out on bond for a recent cocaine arrest, in which he was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Chishlom and Willis were both placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail.

Chisholm, of 8950 SE 88th Place, Ocala, was charged with Trafficking MDMA, Trafficking Cocaine, Manufacturing Cocaine, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Marijuana over 20 grams, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is being held on $72,000 bond. He has been arrested 18 times and has dozens of felony charges. He has been in and out of jail his entire life.

Willis Jr., of 12 Dogwood Drive Course, Ocala, was charged with Trafficking MDMA, Trafficking Cocaine, Manufacturing Cocaine, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is being held on $61,000 bond. Willis Jr. has also been arrested numerous times.

UDEST is an Initiative of the North Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area based out of Jacksonville, Florida. UDEST is comprised of Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Ocala Police Department officers.

No more elephants for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey

Ellenton, Florida — The Feld Family, owners of Feld Entertainment, Inc., the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, announced plans Thursday to remove Asian elephants from their traveling circus performances. Under the plan, 13 elephants currently traveling with the three Ringling Bros. circus units would be relocated to the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant for Conservation® in Florida, by 2018. There they would join the rest of the Ringling Bros. herd of more than 40 elephants.

The Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation is already home to the largest herd of Asian elephants and the most successful breeding program for this endangered species in the Western Hemisphere. The circus will continue to feature other extraordinary animal performers, including tigers, lions, horses, dogs and camels.

This unprecedented change in the 145-year-old Greatest Show On Earth® will allow the company to focus on its Asian elephant conservation programs, both here in North America and through its partnership with the island nation of Sri Lanka. The company will also continue to collaborate with other conservation organizations working to preserve this magnificent species for future generations. For example, the company has placed elephants at eight zoos, either on loan or through donations, and will continue to support the Smithsonian Institution’s research lab working to find a cure for diseases that impact juvenile elephants.

Ringling Bros. use of elephants has been under scrutiny for yeas. It has been repeatedly criticized — and even sued — by several animal rights groups, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States.

In 2011, the circus was fined $270,000 by the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

“This is the most significant change we have made since we founded the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation in 1995. When we did so, we knew we would play a critical role in saving the endangered Asian elephant for future generations, given how few Asian elephants are left in the wild,” said Kenneth Feld, Chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. “Since then, we have had 26 elephant births. No other institution has done or is doing more to save this species from extinction, and that is something of which I and my family are extremely proud. This decision was not easy, but it is in the best interest of our company, our elephants and our customers,” he added.

“Our family has been the proud steward of the American institution that is Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, and our elephants, for 45 years. It is a legacy that we hold near and dear to our hearts, and as producers of The Greatest Show On Earth, we feel we have a responsibility to preserve the esteemed traditions that everyone expects from a Ringling Bros. performance while striving to keep the show fresh and contemporary for today’s families,” said Nicole Feld and Alana Feld, Ringling Bros. producers and Executive Vice Presidents with Feld Entertainment. “As the circus evolves, we can maintain our focus on elephant conservation while allowing our business to continue to meet shifting consumer preferences,” they added.

Ringling Bros. said it could no longer afford to fight the legal battles.

Animal rights activists such as PETA said this is a huge victory.

Airboat ejected 11 passengers during tour

air boat. wild bill's, citrus county, ocala news, boat accident

Passengers got a “wild ride” when they were thrown from an airboat during a tour, Tuesday.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Regional Public Information Coordinator, Greg Workman, while a tour guide was operating a tour for Wild Bill’s Airboat Tours on the Withlacoochee River, the airboat had stopped to explain the area to the occupants of the vessel.

As the tour guide was talking to passengers, a recreational airboat pulled alongside to visit. A short time later, the recreational airboat left the area. As the recreational vessel headed south, the tour vessel allowed the guests to watch the airboat leave. When the recreational vessel was out of sight, the tour airboat began to head north on the river, back to its base.

According to FWC, as the tour airboat began to get on a plane, it hit the wake of the recreational vessel and caused the tour airboat to roll to the right ejecting all eleven passengers.

Four passengers were transpoted to Ocala Regional Medical Center and five passengers to The Villages Regional Hospital.

According to reports, one of the passengers had to undergo surgery for internal injuries and another had surgery for a broken collar bone.

The FWC is still investigating the incident.

Herbalife: Is it just a business pyramid scheme?

herbalife scam, herbalife distributor, ocala news, florida ,pyramid scheme

    [Last updated on March 5, 2014, at 9:45 p.m.]

Mark Hughes founded Herbalife in 1980 and began selling the company’s products from the trunk of his car.

In 1985, the company, who claims it operates as a multi-level marketing company (MLM), was sued by the California Attorney General for being deceitful to its customers about the efficacy of Herbalife products. In lieu of admitting guilt, the company settled the lawsuit for $850,000.

Hughes died on May 20, 2000, after he overdosed on alcohol and the antidepressant doxepin.

The company has been the center of numerous investigations for, insider trading, pyramid schemes, and accusations of serious health-related issued caused by its products.

Shortly after Hughes death, complaints began to pile up against the company after Herbalife users began to experience a decrease in liver function.

By this time, the Caymand Island-based company was using independent distributors to sell their products in at least 91 countries.

According to The Jewish Voice, in 2004, Israel’s Health Minister began investigating claims against Herbalife after multiple consumers were found to have decreased liver function after using the products. Herbalife products were found to contain toxic ingredients such as Qua-qua, Kompri, and Kraska. The testing was performed by a forensic laboratory.

Several woman sued Herbalife and the company settled. Herbalife eventually withdrew the products that contained the toxins.

In a different 2004 class action lawsuit filed on behalf of 8,700 distributors, the lawsuit alleged that the Herbalife company was nothing more than a “sophisticated pyramid scheme.” And again, Herbalife quickly settled for $6 million without admitting any guilt.

Then, following the ban of ephedra in the U.S., Herbalife was forced to remove it from their products.

As the years passed, several lawsuits were filed and settled against Herbalife, including two 2008 lawsuits, which alleged Herbalife products contained toxic levels of lead. Those lawsuits were also extended to include distributors that sold the products.

The lawsuits also alleged that Herbalife products are not GMO free.

In April 2013, a second class action lawsuit was filed in the state of California, alleging Herbalife violated Section 327 of the California Penal Code. The statute is aimed to deter schemes in which individuals pay money in exchange for the chance to receive compensation for recruiting others into a network. Herbalife filed several motions to have the lawsuit dismissed; however, the judge denied their motions. Herbalife is now under heavy provisions in California. You can view those court documents here.

In August 2013, John Peterson, the salesman who made millions selling Herbalife, shot himself in the head while he sat in his vehicle outside his Colorado home. He was selling the products through a website he had created as an independent distributor, which was common for most distributors. All U.S. websites created by Herbalife distributors have since been banned. Herbalife would not discuss this matter.

According to Consumer Affairs, in 2015, more health complaints about Herbalife’s products surfaced.

After using Herbalife products, consumers have complained about severe headaches, anal leakage, anal bleeding, low and high blood pressure, dizziness, leg and back pain, kidney pain, liver damage, nausea, chest pain, rash, rapid heart rate, stomachaches, diarrhea, and much more.

Currently, at least six Federal and State agencies are looking at the company. Chicago, Illinois, Attorney General Lisa Madigan has joined other Federal and State regulators in examining the business practices of Herbalife, Inc. Investigations into Herbalife are also being conducted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the New York Attorney General.

The FTC launched its investigation In March 2014, after receiving more than 200 complaints against Herbalife from Latino consumers.

AG Madigan launched an investigation after being called upon by local leaders who said Herbalife internal documents provided by independent distributors clearly showed it was a pyramid scheme that targeted poor people. Leaders said it was even more disturbing that internal documents showed distributors were instructed to target Latinos in poor neighborhoods.

“By targeting vulnerable populations those who are put at risk by Herbalife’s business model are those who have the most to lose,” said Omar Duque, president & CEO, Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Herbalife targets Latinos because many are undocumented and are less likely to complain.” He said that 60 percent of Herbalife recruits are Latino.

“These individuals have shown great bravery for coming forward to tell their story and hope that state and federal regulators will help them and others who have been victimized by Herbalife,” said Mariela Estrada, Brighton Park Neighborhood Council’s Director of Organizing. “Herbalife has preyed on these victims with false promises of a get-rich-quick scheme that has only benefited those at the top of the pyramid.”

In November, a damning video surfaced that was recorded by Herbalife during a distributor training meeting. The video shows a representative telling the trainees that Herbalife knows they are using deception to recruit other distributors. The video was turned over to the government 30 days before Bill Ackman, founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management LP, revealed to Bloomberg that Herbalife distributors were turning states evidence.

In a letter dated December 17, 2014, the Food and Drug Administration instructed Herbalife to stop airing a video the regulator claimed gave the false impression that its weight-loss shakes and other products had gotten the FDA seal of approval.

Vasilios Frankos, a former FDA official who joined Herbalife as a high-ranking executive in 2010, stated in the video, “When I was director of dietary supplements at the FDA, I oversaw nutritional supplements, making sure they were safe and effective for use.”

“The agency has made no such determination,” the FDA’s Michael Taylor said in the letter, which was also sent to the FTC. “Herbalife and Dr. Frankos should know” the FDA doesn’t approve supplements before they are marketed to the public,” he added.

According to the FTC, it could take between 12 to 18 months to complete its investigation.

The FTC told Ocala Post, “We cannot speak about an active investigation. However, upon completion, all documents will be available to the media and general public.”

Ocala, Florida — The Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team (UDEST) was assisting a probation officer with serving an arrest warrant after officials learned that the probationer might be manufacturing methamphetamine.

When the agent arrived on scene, he saw the suspect, Tiffany A. Chancey, 21, standing outside.

According to reports, Chancey pretended like she did not see the officers and began walking away. When the agent instructed Chancey to stop because she was under arrest, she kept backing away.

The agent then grabbed Chancey by her wrists, at which time she began screaming that the agent was hurting her and tried to pull away.

According to reports, the agent then backed Chancey up against a house to gain control of her movements. The agent reported that he repeatedly told Chancey to calm down and relax, at which point she did.

However, when the agent attempted to handcuff Chancey she quickly turned and pulled away from the agent.

The agent then escorted Chancey to the ground.

According to reports, the suspect then placed her hands beneath her body and refused to put her hands behind her back. As the two were struggling on the ground, the house window directly above them shattered. The agent then pulled the suspect away from the broken glass.

Once the agent was able to gain control of Chancey, two males ran from inside the house and into a wooded area.

A search of the home yielded plastic bags filled with meth oil, sulfuric acid, Coleman camping fuel, needles, meth pots, and other drug paraphernalia used for manufacturing methamphetamine.

The owner of the home was contacted, which turned out to be Chancey’s grandmother. The grandmother stated that she had rented the house to her granddaughter four months ago and that, she paid all four months in advance with cash.

The grandmother had no idea her granddaughter had turned the property into a meth lab.

Agents recovered 263 grams of meth oil from inside the residents.

Chancey and her boyfriend, Skyler Sandifar, 27, were both arrested.

Chancey was charged with Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Resisting Arrest, Off Bond/Failure to Register a motor Vehicle, and Off Bond/Driving While License Suspended. She is being held on $11,500 bond.

Sandifar was charged with Violation of Probation for Grand Theft and Trafficking in Methamphetamine. He is being held without bond.

The agent suffered a laceration to his head as a result of the struggle with Chancey.

West Port Students injured in early morning crash

Ocala, Florida — Five West Port High School students — three girls and two boys –were transported to a local hospital on Tuesday, March 3, following a morning accident involving two vehicles.

At approximately 11:05 a.m., the Marion County Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call about a two-vehicle accident on Southwest 38th Street.

Marion County Fire Rescue units were in the area and arrived on-scene within two minutes.

Upon arrival, rescue workers determined there were a total of eight individuals involved in the crash. Two patients required extrication from a vehicle and were transported along with three others to a local hospital. The other three patients, all adults, were not transported.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the students were driving east on Southwest 38th Street in a 1993 green Honda Accord, and three adults in a black 2014 Chevy Malibu were traveling west.

As the vehicles approached Southwest 38th Street and 67th Avenue, the driver of the Honda — a 16-year-old — turned into the path of the Chevy, at which time the Chevy “T-boned” the Honda.

FHP investigators said that all occupants of the Honda were wearing their seat belts.

The 16-year-old was driving with a learners permit without a licensed driver of at least 21-years-old in the car, which he was cited for. He was also cited for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.

No one in the Chevy was injured.

Investigators found three marijuana cigarettes in a backpack inside the Honda.

All of the teens- ages 16 to 18 — are expected to make a full recovery.

Purple Heart medal returned to the daughter of World War II veteran PVT Jack Elmo Martin

Ocala, Florida — Purple Hearts Reunited, a small nonprofit organization, returned a misplaced Purple Heart medal to the daughter of World War II veteran PVT Jack Elmo Martin late last month. Martin’s medal ended up with distant family members in Arizona after his death, but a genealogical search revealed much closer family, and the foundation was asked to assist in getting the Purple Heart home.

The medal was sent to PVT Martin’s daughter, Ann M. Moore, of Ocala, Florida, at the end of February.

Jack Elmo Martin was born on June 26, 1919, in North Carolina. He enlisted in the Army on April 24, 1944, and served in World War II with the 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, known as “Hell on Wheels.” The 67th Armored Regiment saw action at Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. It is unknown when and where Martin was wounded, but he earned a Purple Heart for his sacrifice.

PVT Martin lived through the war and settled in Ocala, Florida, where he passed away on August 20, 1978. In addition to the Purple Heart PVT Martin received, he was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. Martin also had a son, Robert Martin, who was presented with his flag at the funeral.

While it had never left the family, Cecil and Margaret Frazier of Scottsdale, Arizona, knew the medal could be with a more immediate relative, and reached out to Purple Hearts Reunited for help.

Purple Hearts Reunited accepted the treasured medal and created a frame with a commemorative plaque and photograph of PVT Martin in uniform. The framed Purple Heart medal was then sent directly to PVT Martin’s daughter.

Purple Hearts Reunited (www.purpleheartsreunited.org) was founded in 2012 by a combat-wounded veteran. The organization’s mission is to return lost or stolen military medals of valor to veterans or their families in order to honor their sacrifice to the nation. Hannah Thomas-Garner [Missing]
Ocala, Florida — According to Jeff Garner, father of missing Oregon teen, Hannah Thomas-Garner, tips began to “pour” in after Ocala Post published a story about Hannah on February 12, 2015.

The tips confirmed the father’s suspicion that his daughter was in fact in Ocala, Florida, with “rainbow people.”

Those tips were eventually passed on to members of the Marion County Search and Rescue team.

According to e-mails received by Ocala Post, Hannah has allegedly been spotted at Walmart on Southwest 19th Avenue Road, the Publix across from Trinity Catholic High School, Starbucks in the Paddock Mall in Ocala, and standing on various street corners panhandling.

People that have seen Hannah described her as “out of place” because she reportedly dresses and grooms herself better than the “rainbow people.”

The director of the Marion County Search and Rescue team, Frank Marino, said that he has confirmation Hannah is still in Ocala.

According to Marino, Hannah is allegedly staying with two “rainbow men.” She is reportedly using the nickname “Moose,” but usually refers to herself as “Zion.”

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, over the past several months multiple “rainbow people” have been arrested for various crimes to include drug possession, retail theft, and multiple car burglaries.

Hannah’s family said they are hoping she does not get caught up in the criminal activity.

If you have seen Hannah you can e-mail tips to Leads4hannah@outlook.com or Missing@HelpSave TheNextGirl.com.

Law makers looking to ban smoking in cars with children

smoking in car illegal, ocala news, smoking, cigarettes, florida bill

Florida — The debate over a bill to ban smoking in any vehicle while a child is present is heating up.

Senate Bill 548 would make it illegal to smoke in a vehicle if a child 13 or younger is inside the vehicle.

Many parents in Florida have turned to social media, stating they do not think it should be a law. Others are pointing fingers at parents that do smoke in their car with children, calling them irresponsible.

When someone smokes in the small enclosed space of a car, people are exposed to toxic air that is many times higher than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even when a window is down the EPA said.

“It is really sad this has to become a law. Parents should have more common sense…parents should know better,” Tina Young wrote in a Facebook post about the law.

Other commenter’s think it is a good idea, but feel it should not be law because they feel the government is overstepping its boundaries.

Though the bill would be discussed this upcoming legislative session, bill supporters might face an uphill battle.

If the bill does pass, it would become law on October 1.

The fine for smoking in the car with children would be a non-moving violation. If caught, the fine would be approximately $30.

Many have speculated that Johnson committed suicide, and originally police officials would not confirm the cause of death to Ocala Post because the investigation was pending. However, Allegheny County spokesperson, Amie Downs, confirmed via e-mail Sunday afternoon that Johnson’s death was ruled a suicide by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. His body was found in his vehicle.

Johnson received his nickname from former Trinity Catholic coach Ricky Nattiel, who at the time, said Johnson moved and ran like O.J. Simpson.

In 2010, Johnson helped the Trinity Catholic football team win a state championship and was also part of Trinity state chmpion 4×100 relay track team.

Johnson played for the Florida Gators for two seasons before transferring and playing for the Dukes. He had just finished his senior season this past year with 55 tackles. He had a total of 104 tackles and two interceptions during his two seasons at Dukes.

FHP: I-75 crash killed one, seriously injured others

    fatal crash

    [Last updated on March 1, 2015, at 5:22 p.m.]

Traffic on I-75 was backed up for nearly four hours Saturday afternoon after one person was killed and at least two others were seriously injured.

The two-vehicle crash occurred northbound on I-75 at the 363-mile marker. Traffic was diverted onto State Road 326 and State Road 40.

Motorists were asked to use alternate routes while Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash.

According to FHP, southbound lanes were also heavily congested due to “rubberneckers.”

FHP Public Affairs Officer Sergeant Tracy Hisler-Pace said Jamiya Postell, 10, was killed in the accident. The driver, Pearlie M. Gibbs, 35, and her front seat passenger, Jakera Postell, 18, were seriously injured in the crash. All were residents of Gainesville.

All three females were in the same vehicle — a Kia Sorento — when Gibbs veered into the path of a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Kevin R. Chasteen, 21, while attempting to switch from the center lane to the left lane, pushing Chasteen onto the left shoulder. When Chasteen attempted to reenter the interstate his vehicle began to spin clockwise and struck Pearlie’s vehicle. Gibbs then lost control of her vehicle, and it flipped several times, at which time Jamiya was ejected from the vehicle. According to FHP, she was not wearing a seat belt. Both Gibbs and Jakera were wearing seat belts.

Jamiya was pronounced deceased at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue.

According to FHP, the two women were transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

All lanes of traffic re-opened at approximately 7:01 p.m.

    Chasteen was not injured.

    Deandra Stone [Mugshot]
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at approximately 9:00 a.m, Thursday, a pedestrian, who was walking north on U.S. 441, was struck and killed.

Troopers said Deandra Latron Stone, 32, was traveling northbound on U.S. 441 in his silver 2007 Hyundai Sonata in the right lane when he stopped at the red light at County Road 329.

A Witness said that when the light turned green, Stone’s vehicle did not move. The witness then honked their horn to alert the driver of the light change.

According to reports, Stone proceeded northbound from the traffic signal and was swerving. Witnesses told troopers that Stone nearly struck a guardrail several times.

The pedestrian, Timothy J. Taylor, 42, of Anthony, was walking northbound along the east shoulder when Stone failed to negotiate a left curve and entered the grassy shoulder.

The fright front of Stone’s vehicle then struck Taylor, at which time he went airborne and hit the windshield of the vehicle. Taylor came to his final rest on the east shoulder. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue.

Following the collision, Stone veered left and continued northbound on U.S. 441 before being stopped by bystanders. They made sure he did not leave before FHP arrived on scene.

FHP Trooper, Corporal Thomas R. Dillon, obtained a search warrant in Marion County and blood samples were drawn from Stone. The trooper stated that Stone exhibited signs of being under the influence of drugs. He also failed his sobriety test at the scene.

Stone was arrested and charged with DUI Vehicular Manslaughter. He told troopers that he didn’t stop because he thought he had only hit a deer.

Stone has a lengthy criminal record and has had multiple traffic citations in Marion County.

He was just released from jail on February, 13, 2015, after he was arrested and charged with the Possession and Sale of Cocaine.

Plans to destroy 401-acres of farmland vetoed

ocala news, ocala , farmland, trinity lane, kent guinn
Ocala Mayor Ken Guinn (shown in photo) vetoed Trinity Lane Project for second time.

Ocala, Florida — Today, Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn, vetoed Triniy Lane development plans that would destroy 401-acres of farmland at the corner of Southwest 27th Avenue and Southwest 42nd Street, Ocala.

This is the second time Mayor Guinn has “stepped up” and vetoed the development plans presented by developer John J. Brunetti.

In March of 2014, Guinn said, “The land use is not compatible for the surroundings of the area.” Today, he spoke the same words.

The project had the potential of creating more than 3,000 homes and 925,000 square feet of commercial and office space. Which also included a 335 room hotel.

Glen Hill Farm owner, Craig Bernick, wrote, ” Glen Hill Farm applauds Mayor Guinn’s veto of this development. Ocala and Marion County is losing its identity, and will no longer be known as an equine and outdoor community. It will be known for the most Publix, Wal-mart, CVS, and Walgreens stores per capita of any city in Florida.”

Bernick said if the land were to be developed in the future, it would be better suited for one house per acre lot.

In a February 19 City Council meeting, Attorney Steven H. Gray, who represents Brunetti, said Bernick’s request of one home per one-acre lot was not realistic.

“Ocala is not a one-acre lot market and I don’t see it becoming a one-acre lot market anytime in the near future,” Gray said.

Residents said they felt Gray was insinuating that Ocala residents are poor, and could not afford houses on one-acre lots.

Farm owners are now hoping that Mayor Guinn can get enough votes to uphold his veto.

Investigators discover disturbing case of child abuse inside home

ocala news, child abuse, pollard, sickos, underwear on head
Christopher Pollard [left], and Ashley Pollard [Mugshots]

Silver Springs Shores — Department of Children and Families Child Protection Investigator Dawn White was conducting an investigation in regards to allegations of inadequate supervision of multiple juveniles when she uncovered a disturbing tale of child abuse.

The investigation revealed that Ashley and Christopher Pollard, both 29, would lock two boys — an eight- and nine-year-old — in their bedroom together for long periods of time. During that time, the boys were not allowed to use the bathroom. As a result, the boys would be forced to urinate and defecate in their room.

The boys were then punished for their actions. The Pollards would force the boys to wear their soiled underwear on their heads and would rub their noses in the carpet.

According to reports, one of the juveniles would come home from school and do his homework. After completing his homework, he would then be locked in his bedroom. If he had to go to the bathroom, he would have to knock because the door was locked from the outside. He also said he was forced to eat dinner in his bedroom.

The 9-year-old stated that on February 19, 2015, while he was locked in his room, he urinated in the closet. He was then locked in his room for a week. The juvenile stated Christopher rubbed his nose in the urine and forced him to place soiled underwear on his head while Ashley and another juvenile watched. He said, “Christopher grabbed me by my neck and smeared my face in pee.”

Several days after the incident, the boy still had marks on his neck.

The juvenile said he was then forced to put soiled underwear on his head. He said they told him, “I better not catch you with the underwear off your head.” He said he then sat on the edge of his bed with the underwear on his head until it was time to go to school.

The 8-year-old stated that he was locked in his room a lot because he got into trouble. He said the door was locked so he could not sneak into the kitchen at night. The boy said he would sneak into the kitchen because he was hungry and wanted a snack.

The juvenile stated that he also had to go to the bathroom in his bedroom numerous times, and when he did, he would get a “butt whipping.” And like his brother, he said they would place “poop underwear” on his head until he left for school. “It made me feel like I wanted to throw up because it stunk,” said the boy.

He also told investigators that he was locked in his room immediately following school “until it was dinner time.” After he ate, he would be forced back into his room until the next morning when it was unlocked.

Two boys, age 7, who also lived in the house, confirmed the juveniles’ story. However, the arrest affidavit did not state that the 7-year-old boys were abused.

Photos were taken of the inside the house, including the locks on the doors, and placed into evidence.

Ashley Pollard was arrested and charged with two counts of Felony Child Neglect. She was released from jail on $10,000 bond.

Christopher Pollard was also arrested and charged with two counts of Felony Child Neglect. He is currently being held on $20,000 bond.

All four children have been placed into protective custody.
