Oriana Farrell jailed – New Mexico State Police Officer fired for firing at a van full of kids

Oriana Farrell, new mexico, ocala, ocala post, ocala news, op

New Mexico — The New Mexico State Police Officer, who fired shots at a minivan full of children during a hectic traffic stop, has been fired.

On October 28, 2013, New Mexico State Police Officer Tony DeTavis stopped Oriana Farrell, 39, for speeding. Farrell’s license was also expired. According to reports, Farrell argued with Officer DeTavis over the ticket he had issued to her for speeding, and as Officer DeTavis was returning to his vehicle, Farrell decided to take off with a minivan loaded with children.

According to Officer DeTavis, he pulled Oriana over again and then ordered her out of the minivan but she refused to comply.

At one point, Officer DeTavis stated, Oriana’s son exited the van and rushed him. Police backup arrived shortly after.

According to reports, during the scuffle Oriana and her children got back into the van and proceeded to flee for a second time. As Oriana drove off, Officer Elias Montoya fired shots at the minivan full of children, some as young as six years old, according to reports. Oriana led police on a chase at speeds of 100 MPH with her children in the minivan.

Officer Montoya was placed on administrative leave with pay earlier this week following an investigation into the shooting, which took place outside the northern New Mexico tourist town of Taos. However, Lieutenant Emmanuel Gutierrez, a State Police spokesman, said he confirmed with State Police Chief Pete Kassetas that Officer Elias Montoya is no longer employed by the department. Montoya’s termination was effective at 5 p.m. on December 6, 2013. Montoya has 30 days to file an appeal for his firing.

Montoya wrote in a police report, “I aimed at the left rear tire in an attempt to immobilize the vehicle.”

On Tuesday, he was notified that the agency proposed to fire him, and Kassetas, in consultation with Department of Public Safety Secretary Gorden Eden, made the final decision after a disciplinary hearing Thursday.

Gutierrez issued a brief statement on the firing, but agency rules prohibit additional public comment because it’s a personnel matter that can be appealed.

Montoya had worked for the New Mexico State Police for 12 years with no prior complaints.

Oriana and her son were arrested in front of a hotel after the chase came to an end. She faces charges of Child Abuse, Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia for a pair of marijuana pipes that authorities say were in the van. She has since been released on bond.

Ocala Post was unable to obtain information on Oriana’s son; however, Ocala Post did obtained the full dash cam video from State Police.

Ocala Post wants to hear from you. Do you believe the officer should have been fired? Comments are open below.

Lakeland, Florida — Winn-Dixie, a supermarket known for scamming consumers during their BOGO sales, experienced a scam directed at the company via employees today.

Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested seven Winn-Dixie Employees for fraud.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Organized Retail Crime Unit , in conjunction with Winn-Dixie Organized Retail Crime investigators, arrested five adults and two juveniles involved in an internal scheme to defraud resulting in an estimated $6,000 loss.

“We have developed a great relationship with retailers in Polk County to fight theft, however it occurs. Whether they are dishonest employees or shoplifters, we are going to hold thieves accountable who steal from retailers and drive up prices for honest customers.” Grady Judd, Sheriff

Management at the Winn-Dixie Supermarket located at 1305 Ariana Street in Lakeland, discovered a series of cash shortages in October and November of this year.

According to reports, an investigation revealed that employees were knowingly re-using Coinstar kiosk receipts turned in to cashiers in order to steal cash from the stores.

Customers use a Coinstar kiosk located inside the Winn-Dixie Supermarket to convert loose U.S. currency coins into a receipt (minus a service fee), which is then given to a cashier who provides U.S. currency in the amount of the receipt to the customer. Cashiers are supposedly trained to mark through the receipt after consumers are paid and then the receipt is placed inside the register so the transaction could be accounted for when the register drawer is closed and counted.

Winn-Dixie asset protection team members conducted an internal investigation and discovered seven employees were involved in a scheme to use the Coinstar receipts multiple times to steal money from the store.

Through the course of the investigation it was determined the following Winn-Dixie employees conducted fraudulent transactions:

Demetrice Paulisaint, 25, conducted thirty-five fraudulent Coinstar transactions, Brittany Priest, 19, conducted four fraudulent Coinstar transactions, Deion Sanders, 18, conducted thirty-four fraudulent Coinstar transactions, Tyler Martin, 17, conducted eighteen fraudulent Coinstar transactions, Kiana Jenkins, 18, conducted twenty-four fraudulent Coinstar transactions, Javari Collins, 18, conducted thirty-four fraudulent Coinstar transactions, and Damesha Jones, 17, conducted twenty-two fraudulent Coinstar transactions.

All have been charged with Obtaining Property By Fraud (Under $20,000) which is a Third Degree Felony. Video footage of the fraudulent transactions has been collected. All seven defendants confessed to deputies to engaging in the fraud and depriving the victim (Winn-Dixie Supermarkets) of the money.

Juvenile photos have not been released at this time.

    Google Fighting Nosey Government

A surprising move by Google has G-mail users very pleased.

Google is demanding that government officials in the White House reform the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) by making it mandatory for the government to require a warrant prior to reading citizens e-mails.

Google asked if users felt their e-mail deserved the same protection as their physical mail. Sign the petition, the company continued, “tell the government to get a warrant before reading your e-mail.”

Since Google’s petition went live, around 52,000 people have signed the petition, which is now over halfway to the needed 100,000 signatures.

Google says the ECPA is old, broken legislation that leaves the regular folk, unprotected from government intrusion into our affairs. The ECPA currently dictates that any e-mail can be ordered by a simple subpoena provided that the e-mail is over 180 days old, or has been opened. Thus, given that the bulk of your email is either a half year old or more, or read, the government can under current law, access it with little to no effort.

In the larger discussion concerning privacy, the United States government has lied repeatedly, something that is incredibly frustrating to many citizens. However, this specific law is something that citizens could change, and if changed would in fact make a positive impact to society as a whole.

Citizens can sign the petition here.

Officers responded and found that the resident Connie Cordell, age 65, was sitting in a living room chair with a stab wound to her chest. Cordell was transported to an un-named hospital by ambulance.

Prior to going into surgery, Cordell advised that she was letting her cat out sometime after 6 a.m. when the armed man jumped her fence then entered her home and demanded money. She said when she told him she didn’t have any money he became angry and stabbed her in the chest and took off.

The victim was unable to make further statements at that time due to going into surgery.

During the course of the investigation, a suspect was developed. This person was Lonnie David Todd, 51. Todd had served 20 years in DOC for an Attempted Sexual Battery on a Person Under 12; he was release on June 1, 2013.

Detectives then obtained a warrant for Todd on December 3, 2013 for Failure to Comply with Sexual Offender Requirements.

On December 4, 2013 Detective Mathew Steckman and Detective Mike Hilton were able to conduct a full interview with Cordell at the hospital. At that time, a more detailed account of the circumstances was revealed. In her statement, Cordell disclosed that the suspect had entered her home and after demanding money, had taken her to her bedroom and attempted to sexually batter her. She was able to fight back and that is when she was stabbed by the suspect, who immediately fled.

Cordell was able to identify her attacker as Lonnie Todd from a photographic lineup.

Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office located Todd at the address on his Florida Driver’s License in Fort McCoy, Florida and take him into custody for the warrant. Todd was transported to OPD headquarters and interviewed. Although he confirmed his presence in the area during the time of the incident, he denied committing the crimes.

Public safety communications officer pulled gun on reporter

    Shauna Justice [Mugshot]
Volusia County, Florida — An off-duty public safety telecommunications officer with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office who was arrested after she pointed a gun at a reporter that had went to her house to try to interview her for a news story, resigned today.

Justice has been suspended without pay since the incident, a disciplinary decision had not yet been made pending the results of an internal investigation.

The incident occurred at about 12:35 p.m. on November 12, 2013, at the home of telecommunication officer Shauna Justice,28, who lives near New Smyrna Beach. That’s when a reporter from WESH-2 News knocked on Justice’s door, with no camera or microphone in hand, to see if she would be willing to be interviewed for a story. When Justice answered the door, she pointed a gun at the reporter’s head through the exterior storm door and yelled at the reporter to get off of her property. Fearing for her life, the reporter backed away while trying to get Justice to calm down. Justice then walked out the door and continued to point the gun at the reporter, only dropping her arm down to her side when the reporter returned to her news van. She (the reporter)and her photographer then drove off.

When responding deputies questioned Justice, she admitted pointing the gun at the reporter, saying that she believed she was justified because she was protecting her property and felt harassed to the point where she felt threatened. However, the deputy wrote in his report that Justice made no mention of any threats to her physical well-being that would have justified her pointing a gun at the reporter.

Justice was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. She was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on $1,500 bond. Deputies seized a 9mm semi-automatic handgun that was loaded with 11 rounds in the magazine, but didn’t have a round chambered.

Justice was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in April 2007.

    Measles outbreak in the U.S.

    0

measles, ocala, u.s., ocala news, op
As of December 5, 2013, 175 people in the United States have been reported as having Measles.

This year, Measles outbreaks have occurred in several states. One outbreak, in New York, is the largest outbreak in 15 years in the United States. An outbreak in North Carolina has also resulted in numerous cases.

Most of these people were not vaccinated or did not know their vaccination status. Measles is brought into the United States by un-vaccinated U.S. residents and foreign travelers who get infected when they are in other countries. They can infect others, which can lead to outbreaks in the United States.

Make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date, including when you are preparing to travel. And, if you plan to travel abroad with an infant or young child, be sure to talk with your child’s doctor about what is recommended for Measles vaccination of young travelers.

Most adults born before 1957 had measles as children. They might remember being sick for a few days with a rash and fever. And they might recall that other children in their school or neighborhood had measles at the same time. Some children developed severe complications, like pneumonia or encephalitis (swelling of the brain), or even died from measles.

Today, thanks to vaccines, very few children in the United States get measles. The number of people with Measles has decreased by more than 99% since a Measles vaccine was licensed in 1963. But, to keep people protected against Measles, we need to always have a high level of vaccination in the community.

Measles is still common in many countries—including many African, Asian, and European countries. So, measles can easily be brought into the United States by travelers or visitors who are infected. Measles is highly contagious and can spread quickly in areas and communities where people are not vaccinated.

    Measles Can Be Serious

Complications from Measles can be serious. They occur more commonly in children younger than 5 years old and adults 20 years of age or older. For every 1,000 children who get Measles, one or two will die from the disease. In fact, worldwide, Measles is still a significant cause of vaccine-preventable death among children. In 2008, there were about 164,000 Measles deaths worldwide—that equals 450 deaths every day or 18 deaths every hour.

The CDC says the best protection against Measles is the MMR or MMRV Vaccine. However the vaccine in very controversial, as many believe the vaccine causes autism in children, therefore parents refuse to allow their children to be vaccinated.

Measles vaccine is usually given as part of a combination vaccine that provides protection against three diseases: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR). This vaccine is strongly endorsed by medical and public health experts as safe and effective.

CDC recommends that children get two doses—the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age and the second dose before entering school at 4 through 6 years of age.
Your child’s doctor may offer the MMRV vaccine, which is a combination vaccine that protects against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella (chickenpox). MMRV vaccine is licensed for children 12 months through 12 years old. It may be used in place of MMR vaccine if a child needs to have Varicella vaccine in addition to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccines. Your child’s doctor can help you decide which vaccine to use.
Anyone who is not protected against Measles is at risk of getting infected with Measles virus when they travel internationally. Check with your healthcare provider to see if you or your child (including children less than 12 months old) should be vaccinated before traveling.

Family health history could save your life

health report, family health, ocala, ocala news, ocala post, opFamily health history connects people to their past and their future. Knowing one’s family health history is a key part of reducing future health risks. As Benjamin Franklin once said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Why is family health history important?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, family members share genes, behaviors, lifestyles, and environments that together may influence their health and their risk of chronic disease. By creating a family health history, you and your family will be better equipped to assess health risks and take preventative steps to lower the likelihood of contracting a disease. Some ethnic and racial backgrounds are genetically more likely to contract certain diseases.

    What should it include?

Your family health history should include health information about each of your immediate family members (parents, siblings and children) and blood relatives (uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents). When collecting information on each individual, remember to include information such as their profession, lifestyle habits and medical conditions.

    For example:

    Relative 1: Grandpa Douglas
    Name: Douglas
    Relation: Grandfather
Profession: Various office positions until retirement (sedentary).
Lifestyle: Limited exercise and no particular food habits
Medical Conditions: Diabetes, age 65. First record of diabetes in family.

    Relative 2: Cousin Susan
    Name: Susan
    Relation: Cousin
    Profession: Nurse (Active)
Lifestyle: Physically active in leisure time
Medical Conditions: Breast Cancer, age 30. Mother and grandmother also diagnosed with breast cancer before 40.

Grandpa Douglas is the first case of type 2 diabetes in your family history. He had a sedentary lifestyle and developed the disease at age 65, which may not mean you have an increased genetic risk for diabetes. However it is important to note that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by exercising and losing weight.

Cousin Susan may have increased risk for Breast Cancer due to her mother’s and grandmother’s diagnosis of breast cancer at an early age. Knowing her family health history prompted her to talk with her doctor about early screenings for the disease. If you have a family history of early diagnosis of breast cancer, you may want to consider speaking with your doctor about screening early for this disease as a precaution.

According to the American Cancer Society, having one first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman’s risk. Having two first-degree relatives increases her risk about three-fold.

What is the best way to get family health history info?

Begin with asking your relatives. This Thanksgiving as you gather around the table and share stories, ask about your family health history. Share the importance of knowing your family health history for disease prevention. Respect those who do not feel comfortable sharing their medical history or are uncomfortable sharing in a group setting, and provide alternate methods—such as a form or an email.

Other resources for gaining information regarding your family health history can include obtaining permission from a relative to request their medical records, or finding obituaries and death notices in the local paper that may list the cause or age of a relative’s death. Local newspapers, funeral homes, religious institution records and local Florida Department of Health locations are good places from which to research or request these records.

If you do not know your health history, you can begin a family health history for your children and grandchildren by writing down your health information.

    How do I practice prevention?

By knowing your family health history, you are better equipped to make health and lifestyle choices that can reduce your risk of developing a disease. Simple lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more go a long way in preventing environment related risk factors and preventing obesity, which will further reduce your health risk.

By knowing your family health history, you can speak with your doctor about early screenings for genetic disorders and birth defects, cancers and heart disease.

Protest in Rhode Island To Keep Christmas in Christmas Tree

Rhode Island — Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee released statement Monday December 2, 2013 announcing that the tree at the State House will be called a Christmas tree, instead of a holiday tree, ending a two year long debate.

In 2011, in his first year as governor, Chafee’s calling of a “holiday tree” sparked outrage and protest at a competing Christmas tree lighting ceremony. A state lawmaker even called the governor a “Grinch.”

Chafee, a Republican turned independent turned Democrat, said in a statement that “In 2011, my first year celebrating December in the State House I gave a simple six word instruction to the planners of the annual tree lighting: ‘Do what they did last year.’ “

Despite the myriad of pressing issues facing Rhode Island and the nation, this presumably happy event became a focal point for too much anger. Strangely lost in the brouhaha was any intellectual discussion of the liberties pioneered here in Rhode Island 350 years ago in our Charter. Because I do not think how we address the State House tree affects our ‘lively experiment,’ this year’s invitation calls the tree a Christmas tree,” Chafee continued.

Rhode Island residents say Chafee is a Grinch, and they feel it is un-American to call a Christmas tree anything other than that.

One Rhode Island resident even went further saying, “If you do not like our decorations, our Christmas trees, or that we celebrate Christmas, then maybe you should leave our state.”

The tree lighting in the State House rotunda in Providence, Rhode Island is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. ET.

Chafee announced in September that he would not run for re-election next year.
