South Glens Falls, New York – Two young boys and a girl were injured after a 10 x 10 “bouncy house” that witnesses claim was secured, was swept away by a gust of wind Monday afternoon. Parents watched in horror as the wind lifted the “bounce house” 50 feet into the air.

The girl, 10, fell out first and only sustained minor cuts and scrapes. One of the boys, 6, landed on a parked car and the other boy, 5, landed on asphalt. Both boys were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to police, the boys were at least 20 feet in the air when they fell out of the “bounce house.”

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. in front of a townhouse on Ferry Boulevard. Parents say the “bouncy house” floated over a stretch of woods and landed in the fields behind Oliver W. Winch Middle School.

A witness snapped a picture of the bounce house in mid-air.

Police say the boys are expected to make a full recovery.

Tragic I-75 accident is the motivation for “Move Over – Slow Down – Save A Life” month

Florida – As National Police Week starts today, law enforcement officers across the nation remember and honor our fallen heroes – those officers who in the service of their communities have given the ultimate sacrifice are remembered.

As Florida mourns the loss of Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Chelsea Richard, who lost her life along with two others barely a week ago in a deadly traffic crash on Interstate 75 in Ocala, Florida, the Florida State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the Florida Police Benevolent Association and the Florida Sheriff’s Association are designating June 2014 as “Move Over – Slow Down – Save a Life” month.

The safety of the public and Florida’s law enforcement officers traveling and working our highways, roads, streets, and Interstates is paramount, this month and every month,” said James W. Preston, President of the Florida State Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police.

“The sheriffs realize the dangers law enforcement officers face every time they pull over a vehicle and they agree everyone has a civic duty to reduce this danger by complying with our traffic laws,” said Steve Casey, Executive Director, Florida Sheriffs Association. “In this regard, the sheriffs are proud to partner with the other state law enforcement agencies and associations to bring attention to this critical public safety issue via this campaign.”

All too often, our law enforcement officers are in grave danger when they are working Florida’s roadways, and we support every effort to better educate the public about the Move Over law,” said Springfield Police Chief Philip Thorne, President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association.

Law enforcement officers who are working on Florida’s roadways face great danger from distracted drivers. To better protect Florida’s law enforcement officers, the statewide law enforcement organizations call upon all law enforcement officers in the state to actively educate the public and enforce the Move Over law throughout the state. Florida’s Move Over law, FS. 316.126, requires drivers to:

    • On a two-lane roadway, slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit;
    • On a two-lane roadway, slow to five miles per hour if the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less; and
    • On an interstate or roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction, you must vacate the lane closest to any emergency or law enforcement vehicle parked along the roadway as soon as it is safe to do so. If you are not able to safely move over, slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit unless directed otherwise by a law enforcement officer.
    I-75 Accident in Ocala/Marion County
Chelsea Richard’s patrol car was hit during the accident.

As the summer travel season gets fully underway, please remember to slow down and move over for our public safety personnel working along our roadways. This simple act will save many lives. Thank you and be safe,” said President John Rivera, Florida PBA.

The Fraternal Order of Police and its partners calls upon all of Florida’s active law enforcement officers to engage in a concentrated effort to increase public awareness and enforce the “Move Over” law. “When it comes to the safety of law enforcement, it doesn’t matter what badge we wear. We are in this together,” said Javier Ortiz, President, Miami FOP Lodge 20.

Failing to move over is a deadly choice, not only for you but for those of us who are out protecting you,” said Colonel David Brierton, director of the Florida Highway Patrol. “We lost a hero on May 3rd, Trooper Chelsea Richard and her death were preventable. People, be responsible, move over and slow down.”

The May 3, 2014 accident has affected many lives, not just those that were killed. The ripple effect that the sudden and tragic deaths of Trooper Chelsea Richard, Mr. John Duggan, and Mr. Robert Phillips has left behind is incomprehensible. Lives were lost, and the lives of the family and friends left behind will be forever changed.

Troopers said it is simple when you see flashing lights, move over, and if you can’t move over you are required by law to reduce your speed by 20 mph below the posted speed limit, period.

There are large signs posted along I-75 that clearly inform drivers of the “Move Over” law. Troopers said ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law; especially when it could cost someone their life. The law will be enforced and drivers will be ticketed.

The investigation into the May 3, 2014 accident that claimed the lives of three (3) innocent people is still ongoing.

“This accident investigation is very complicated and the homicide portion of the investigation will take time,” said Sergeant Tracy Hisler-Pace, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol. “This is a very tragic situation for everyone involved and FHP thanks everyone for their patience during this trying time.”

Dunnellon couple terrorize & kidnap woman; 911 call from trunk saved her life

    dunnellon kidnapping
    Deaton (Left) Kuttner (Right)

Dunnellon, Florida –A situation that seemed like a scene taken right out of the movie ‘THE CALL,’ had a woman fearing for her life this past weekend.

On Sunday, May 11, 2014, deputies made contact with Lynn Humphress, 20, whom stated that on Saturday, May 10,2014, at approximately 12:43 p.m. she began texting Haley Kuttner, 20, and Silas Paul Deaton, 21. During the text conversation, Kuttner advised Humphress that Deaton needed a ride and offered to pay for Humphress gas with cash or “Bud.”

Humphress told detectives that during several more texts, Kuttner offered up several other different types of narcotics for sale in an attempt to get a ride.

According to reports, at approximately 12:26 a.m. on May 11, 2014, Humphress drove to meet Kuttner and Deaton. Upon arriving at their residence, Humphress stated that Kuttner and Deaton got into her vehicle and instructed her to drive down a dirt road. Humphress told investigators that while she was driving down the dirt road, Deaton told her to pull over so he could roll a “joint.”

Humphress told investigators that Kuttner told her to turn off the lights so they would not be seen. Humphress stated that Kuttner, whom was in the passenger front seat, then reached into her purse, pulled out an unknown object then handed it to Deaton, whom was seated in the back seat.

According to investigators, Deaton then grabbed Humphress from behind and began choking her to the point that Humphress nearly blacked out.

Humphress then asked, “Why are you doing this?” Deaton replied, “You know why.” Deaton accused Humphress of stealing $50.00, marijuana and prescription pills from [their] residence days earlier. Humphress stated that she told Deaton that she didn’t steal anything, according to reports.

Deaton then put a knife to Humphress’ throat, cutting her, as Kuttner reached into her purse and pulled out some rope and began tying Humphress’ arms.

At that time Kuttner turned to Deaton and asked, “Are we really going to do this?” Deaton replied, “Yes.”

Deaton then ordered Humphress to get out of the vehicle or he would kill her, according to investigators. Humphress told investigators that she then exited the vehicle, at which time Deaton robbed her and threw her into the trunk. Kuttner and Deaton returned to the vehicle and drove off with Humphress inside the trunk.

While in the trunk, Humphress called 911 from her cell phone, in hopes she could give her GPS coordinates to the dispatcher. Approximately 24 extremely intense minutes had passed when deputies spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Humphress informed the 911 operator that she thought the cops had stopped the vehicle, and when she was certain, Humphress pulled the emergency release cable and freed herself from the trunk.

During the 911 call, the dispatcher kept calm and diligently relayed information to the deputies that was being passed from Humphress.

[WARNING: The 911 call may disturbing to some]

    Kuttner was driving the vehicle.

Detectives said that during an interview with Kuttner she told multiple lies and could not keep her story straight. However, she did admit to removing rope from her purse in order to tie Humphress’ arms.

Deaton told investigators the entire incident was his idea but refused to cooperate any further.

The belief is that Kuttner and Deaton planned to drive Humphress out to the Forest and kill her.

Kuttner is charged with Kidnapping /Inflicting Bodily Harm or Terrorize, Carjacking with a Weapon, Possession of Marijuana and Knowingly Driving While License Suspended.

Deaton is charged with Kidnapping /Inflicting Bodily Harm or Terrorize, Carjacking with a Weapon, Possession of Marijuana and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.

Deaton has previously been arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief, Battery, Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony, Resisting Arrest and has multiple Violation of Probation charges.

    Florida Sales Tax Holiday

Florida – Before the 2014 legislative session began, the Florida Senate, Senator Don Gaetz and Governor Scott joined in a commitment to cutting taxes by $500 million.

Today, Rick Scott delivered on the largest broad based tax cut in a decade.

If you’re buying a computer or clothes for your son or daughter to start school or begin their first job, you will pay less because of the Governor’s commitment to pro-family tax cuts.

HEALTH ALERT: First Case Of MERS-CoV Infection Confirmed

    Syndrome Coronavirus MERS-CoV, ocala
    Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV)

Orlando, Florida — The Florida Department of Health today confirmed the first Florida case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in a patient at an Orlando hospital.

“The Florida Department of Health is working closely with hospital officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure appropriate care of the patient and protect the health of all residents and visitors in Florida,” said Dr. John Armstrong, State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health.

The Florida Department of Health in Orange County is taking all necessary steps to protect and inform the public,” said Dr. Kevin Sherin, Director for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. “Our office has set up an information line to address any questions and we will continue to work closely with the hospital to ensure the safety of our community.”

The patient is in good condition and is improving,” said Antonio Crespo, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist and Chief Quality Officer for Dr. P. Phillips Hospital. “We are taking every precaution, but believe the risk of transmission from this patient is very low since his symptoms were mild and he was not coughing when he arrived at the hospital.”

The patient is visiting the United States from Saudi Arabia. The patient first flew to London and then through Boston and Atlanta, arriving in Orlando on May 1, 2014. The patient was hospitalized on May 9, 2014 and was placed in isolation once MERS-CoV was suspected. Efforts are underway to make contact with any individuals who had close contact with the patient during travel or in the Orlando area. The patient remains in stable condition and is receiving appropriate care.

MERS-CoV infection is a viral respiratory illness that was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. MERS-CoV transmission has occurred in hospital settings, but there is no evidence of sustained spread in communities. How the virus emerged is unknown. There is no available vaccine or specific treatment for the virus.

Symptoms of MERS-CoV are similar to those of the flu and include:

    • Congestion
    • Cough
    • Fever over 100.4
    • Shortness of breath
    • Pneumonia
    • Body aches
    • Diarrhea

MERS-CoV is a reminder of the precautions that everyone can take to protect themselves, their families, and their communities from any communicable diseases:

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.
    • Stay at home when you are sick, and avoiding close contact with sick people.

If you were recently in any of the areas mention and are having symptoms, please visit your local hospital immediately.

Marion County Sheriff’s Employee Found Dead

Marion County, Ocala News, Banner, Newspaper

Ocala, Florida — An employee of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Bureau was found dead this afternoon.

Brian C. Gibson, 30, was found after a member of SWAT noticed that Gibson’s car was parked in a spot normally reserved for SWAT.

When an Emergency Management Employee brought the keys to move the car, he found Gibson slumped over dead in the driver’s seat.

Officials said they do not suspect foul play at this time.

The investigation is being handled by the Ocala Police Department.

No further information is available at this time.

Marion County NAACP says poor people want your “Stuff”

welfare, free stuff, ocala news, NAACPOcala, Florida — Marion County residents are outraged over recent statements made by Reverend Reginald Willis, chairman of Marion County’s NAACP Religious Affairs Committee and co-chairman of its Civic Engagement Committee.

Willis is pointing his finger directly at white residents as well as Marion County’s elected officials, blaming them for the shortcomings of the black community.

He is now calling for a “Clarion Call” (Demand) meeting.

Willis said, “Local extremist elected and appointed leaders are ignoring the needs of the black community while joining forces with the rich and powerful whom are spending billions of dollars corrupting the political system. The local minority communities are in crisis.”

Willis said that the black community wants the same thing as “other” people. Willis said poor people within the black community want to live in that gated community, they want to have a horse farm.

The most shocking of all is what was written on a website that appears to be against the white community. The rant was actually more like a list of demands for “free stuff.”

    The list is as follows:

    • Restore the voting rights of all black felons in Marion County so they can feel like they are part of the community instead of disenfranchised.
    • Give more civil rights and human rights
    • Better criminal justice and public safety
    • More economic justice (Higher Pay)
    • Better education
    • Better housing
    • More Medicaid expansion and healthcare exchanges
    • Abolish the “Stand Your Ground” law

The above important issues are of critical value to the local African American communities in Marion County. The local NAACP in recent time has spent significant time working with the National, Regional and FL State Conference NAACPs preparing to lead the fight for equality on every front. The time is now to bring the struggle fight to the home front (Ocala/Marion County),” Willis wrote.

The website not only suggest that the “Stand Your Ground” law should be abolished, but also that drugs should be legal.

Willis also said that he is calling on the black community and coalition partners to join a movement designed to change the present local leadership.

Willis wrote, “The ‘Clarion Call’ meetings will start a new chapter of local people power.”

“Today’s ‘Clarion Call’ meeting will be the first of many to come,” said Willis.

This meeting comes just weeks after the Marion County NAACP accused local law enforcement of singling out Mary Alexander, a local woman arrested on multiple charges of welfare fraud. The NAACP stated that law enforcement is against her since she is a “legitimate” black business woman. The NAACP requested all charges be dropped.

According to the last Census, more than 98 percent of the black community within Marion County is already on some sort of government assistance. Whether that be free child care, food stamps, cash assistance, free housing, free utilities, free phones, free education and sometimes free transportation, Willis wants more.

Investigators said that many of the individuals that are receiving government assistance are doing so illegally, and many times use cash assistance to buy drugs and alcohol.

Jack Heacock, Jacksonville director for the Division of Public Assistance Fraud at the state Department of Financial Services, said public assistance fraud has increased drastically since 2011. Since January of 2014, investigators have uncovered more than $400,000 just in childcare fraud; that is more than triple the amount in 2011.

Ocala Post contacted the office of the NAACP via e-mail. We asked if they felt that a persons socioeconomic status is determined by the color of their skin. Furthermore, we asked why the leaders of the NAACP separate and divide the human race, by continually blaming others in society for the actions of those within the black community?

Ocala Post’s e-mail has not been answered.

Ocala Post is currently investigating details in regards to the website, including the registered owner.

Ocala Post wants to hear your thoughts. Do you think the Marion County NAACP has over stepped its boundaries?

Michael Tarver, former owner of Polliwog Dental, practicing in Ocala

    Photo Taken By Ocala Post

Ocala, Florida — On January 13, 2014, a case involving a lawsuit that was filed against Pediatric Dental Partners, LLC, formally known as Polliwog Dental, was reopened. Pediatric Dental Partners, LLC is registered to Michael Tarver, the former owner of Polliwog Dental, LLC.

Andrea Frederick and Tiffany Sullivan, two former Polliwog employees, are suing Polliwog Dental for violating the Whistle Blower Act. The 39-page lawsuit also states that Polliwog Dental, LLC failed to pay overtime wages that were owed to the employees.

The lawsuit alleges that Michael Tarver was recorded via a cell phone video while illegally altering medical records that were requested by the State of Florida Department of Health (DOH) investigator, Mike Knezevich during their investigation.

In the lawsuit, Sullivan states that she was ordered by Tarver to refuse DOH investigator Knezevich any documents that were subpoenaed.

According to the complaint, the two women stated that both Rebecca and Michael Tarver interrogated them about the DOH investigation on multiple occasions.

Consequently, Frederick and Sullivan were terminated from Polliwog Dental after the Tarver’s learned the employees cooperated with investigators from the DOH. Mike Knezevich was the lead investigator in the case, however, he was forced to resign due to pressure from his employers after Michael Tarver filed a complaint against him. Tarver said Knezevich was a corrupt, gross incompetent alcoholic that lacked ethics and abused his power. Tarver even went as far as to have Knezevich’s employment records from his previous job in Alachua County included in the complaint.

Starting in 2012, Tarver had multiple complaints filed against him at the Ocala Police Department. Each time that Tarver was investigated by detectives, he was cleared.

Polliwog Dental was investigated by the DEA back in July of 2013 for suspicion of overmedicating children. Specifically using Demerol to sedate and “control” children who Tarver felt were misbehaved, according to his own words.

In a police report filed with OPD, one victim told investigators that she was crying, scared and ran down the hallway in an attempt to get to her mom. The victim said Tarver chased her down the hallway, picked her up like a baby, and while wearing gloves, covered her mouth and nose. The victim stated she had trouble breathing and Tarver asked her, “Are you done?” He then placed her back into the dentistry chair. Later, after being released, the mom noticed her child’s lip had been busted. An employee of Polliwog confirmed the victim’s allegations, according to police. OPD questioned Tarver and he said, “I remember the patient because she was so badly misbehaved. She ran down the hallway kicking and screaming at the dental staff. I didn’t put my hands over her mouth. The child had to be sedated due to her extremely poor behavior. Tarver was not charged, according to OPD, he had not committed any criminal offenses.

June 26, 2013, OPD received a complaint about a child that received a 1-1/2″ laceration in the middle of his forehead. Tarver “claims” the child tripped over his own feet causing him to fall and hit his head. Tarver did not call EMS. When questioned by OPD Tarver said, I am Emergency Medicine Certified, therefore I did not feel the need to contact EMS. OPD notified DCF upon this investigation due to OPD being called out multiple times starting in June of 2012. The injury did require stitches.

In one incident a parent said that Tarver placed his hand over the nose and mouth of her child until the child lost consciousness.

Tarver has repeatedly blamed the children, citing the children that come to his office are poorly behaved and cry when they are being treated. Witnesses have confirmed that Tarver also repeatedly yelled at children, telling them to “shut up and stop crying”, even hitting one child in the head after telling him to “shut up.”

According to police reports, one child, four years of age, was given a dose of Versed and the child stopped breathing. Tarver did CPR to revive the child but failed to notify the parents. Tarver’s notes, which were seized by the DEA, described the incident as a “brief apnea episode.”

On June 28, 2013, OPD turned over information to Department of Health investigator Mike Knezevich after another complaint of a child receiving injuries while at Polliwog surfaced.

On September 4, 2013, Tarver’s license was suspended.

Ocala Post contacted the State Attorney’s Office and asked:

Has the State Attorney’s Office read over the charges from the DOH or just the allegations filed with OPD?

State Attorney Bill Gladson said, “This office was asked by detectives to review three separate incidents concerning potential child abuse. Some of these allegations had already been reported to the Department of Children and Families months prior to being referred to the Ocala Police Department.”

Each case was reviewed to determine whether, if true, the allegation would constitute the crime of child abuse. To prove the crime of child abuse beyond a reasonable doubt, the State would have to prove that a defendant knowingly or willfully, and intentionally, inflicted physical injury, or committed an act that could reasonably result in physical injury, to a child. At the time, physical injury was defined as ‘death, permanent or temporary disfigurement or impairment of any body part.’ During their investigation, the Detectives with the Ocala Police Department conducted numerous interviews of staff members, reviewed surveillance video, photographs, medical records, physical evidence as well as interviewed the complainants in the cases.”

Based on the evidence available, it was decided that no single allegation, if proven as alleged, would constitute the crime of child abuse such that any conviction could be sustained on appeal. This office did not review, and was not asked to review, any matter being investigated by the Department of Health or the Board of Dentistry,” Gladson said.

Polliwog has since changed its name to Churchill Dentistry, but according to the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations, the actual registered business name is Churchill Pediatric Dentistry, LLC, which is registered to Rebecca Tarver, Michael Tarver’s wife.

Ocala Post contacted the DOH on May 1, 2014, after receiving multiple inquiries from Ocala residents as to whether or not Michael Tarver was still practicing in Ocala.

Ocala Post learned that Michael Tarver is currently practicing pediatric dentistry within the Churchill Dentistry office in Ocala, Florida.

Michael Tarver’s license was reinstated on November 19, 2013, and in the final “Settlement Agreement” that was ordered it states that Michael Tarver is required have his records monitored for a period of one year, pay fines, publish a 2,500 word article, take a three (3) hour continuing education course on “Dental Record Keeping” and a three (3) hour continuing education course on “Ethics” that must be completed within a 12 month period.

Through social media, residents of Marion County have called Michael Tarver’s “punishment” laughable.

According to McKinley Lewis, Public Information Officer with the DOH, Dr. Harry E. Bopp, DMD, is the current records reviewer assigned to Michael Tarver approved by the Board of Dentistry.

Michael Tarver does not have a supervisor physically within the Churchill Dentistry Office that oversees his work. Michael Tarver actually works with his wife, Rebecca Tarver.

According to Churchill Dentistry’s new policy, parents are now allowed back with their children during procedures.

Churchill Dentistry has also been approved to accept Medicaid.

According to the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations, Pediatric Dental Partners, LLC, registered to Michael Tarver, is an active LLC with a Clermont, Florida address.

Man sent to prison 13-years late, released

    Cornealious Michael Anderson
    Cornealious Michael Anderson

Missouri — Cornealious “Mike” Anderson was convicted for taking part in a robbery at a Burger King in 1999. He was sentenced to 13-years in prison. When Andersons appeals ran out in 2002 he was supposed to be called to prison, however, that day never came.

According to court documents, in July of 2013, corrections officials finally discovered the clerical error and sent a U.S. Marshall to arrest Anderson after being free for 13-years, just days before his original 13-year sentence would have ended.

A petition was immediately started on Change.org receiving more than 35,000 signatures.

During the 13-years that Anderson was a free man he had turned his life around. Unlike most criminals, Anderson did not re-offend, while he was free he walked a straight and narrow path.

Statistics show that a vast majority of offenders are also re-offenders, but Anderson said that was not an option for him. He said when he was arrested in 1999 it was a huge wakeup call and he immediately turned his life around.

He was only 22-years-old when he committed the robbery. Anderson, now 36, said at that time he was young and stupid, but that is not the person he is today.

On May 5, 2014 Anderson walked into a Mississippi County courtroom expecting the worst. He was expecting to be ordered to serve his original 13-year prison sentence.

Judge Terry Brown, however, didn’t see it that way. “I don’t see any reason to keep you locked up in prison,” said Judge Brown. “I believe continuing to incarcerate you serves no purpose, would be a waste of taxpayer dollars and punish a good man.”

Judge Brown said that he recognized the fact that Anderson had been an upstanding citizen for the 13-years he was free, therefore, Judge Brown considered the 4,794 days Anderson was free, as time served.

During the 13-years Anderson was free, he started a family and a successful construction business.

“You are a good father, a good husband and an upstanding tax paying citizen of Missouri,” said Judge Brown.

On Monday, Anderson walked out of the courtroom a free man.

The judge’s decision took less than 10 minutes, according to reports.

Anderson’s wife and daughter hugged him as they all cried together.

The victim of the robbery said he completely agrees with the courts decision.

We want to hear from you! Do you agree with the courts decision?

    Picture captures fire-whirl

Chillicothe, Missouri — As a woman was driving down a county road, she came across a farmer burning off his field.

The Instagram up-loader known as “Nicejalapeno,” said it was a windy day and the flames were intense.

As she stopped to snap a photo, the wind kicked up and created a fire tornado or “firenado.” This phenomenon is actually known as a “fire-whirl.”

She posted that it was the most beautiful, yet scariest thing she has ever seen.

According to a meteorologist with weather.com, fire-whirls turn and burn. They are rapidly spinning vortices that form when air — super-heated by an intense wildfire — rises rapidly and is met with a spin from wind.

Fire-whirls have been seen as high as 200 feet tall, and are usually narrow at about two to three feet wide.

According to the Division of Forestry, fire-whirls are often seen during the wildfire season and are being caught on camera more frequently thanks to the advancement in smart phones.

On March 14, 2014, Denver, Colorado, firefighters were conducting a controlled burn when the wind picked up, producing a potentially dangerous situation for firefighters, and it was caught on video by Thomas Rogers with South Metro Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters said that even though it only looked like a whirling smoke storm, the center was actually fire surrounded by smoke and flying tumbleweed. A potentially very dangerous situation they said.

This particular fire-whirl actually crossed the control line, starting a secondary fire.

Firefighters said they quickly gained control of the situation and no one was injured.

Ocala man that raped 11-year-old girl finally arrested

Ocala man rapes girl, Marion County
    Michael Hughes [Mugshot]
Ocala, Florida — On January 18, 2014 Detective Erik Dice was notified after a patrol deputy made contact with a group of juveniles who had allegedly broken into a vacant residence at 6605 NW 60th Court, Ocala.

During the encounter, the deputy received information about an 11-year-old girl being raped by a man later identified as Michael Hughes, 23, of Ocala. Hughes is known “in the streets” as “MJ” or “Little Mike.” The deputy then passed that information onto Detective Dice.

During an interview, the 11-year-old told Detective Dice that she walked to a vacant house with a group of people when “MJ” had the idea to enter the house. The girl told detectives that one of the individuals in the group went around the back of the house and entered the residence through a window. She said once they were inside the house the front door was then unlocked for the rest of the group.

The girl told Detective Dice that when she entered the house she saw a dresser in a room and decided to sit on it. She said “MJ” then entered the room and she immediately got off the dresser and attempted to leave the room. She said “MJ” then slammed the door shut and locked it.

According to reports, “MJ” then pushed the 11-year-old up against the wall and she shouted stop. She told Detective Dice that she then ran to the window and told “MJ” she was leaving, but she could not get the window open.

She said “MJ” then pushed her down onto the dresser and pulled down her pants. She said she was screaming “No” and “Stop” and pushed him off of her. She then stood up, pulled her pants up and said, “I do not want to do this.” The girl said he replied, “I don’t care.” She said “MJ” then grabbed her and slid his hand down her pants and pulled her pants back down, while removing his pants at the same time.

The 11-year-old stated that “MJ” then digitally penetrated her and was rubbing her butt and vagina inside her underwear, according to reports.

She told Detective Dice that “MJ” pulled out his penis and put a condom on. She said he turned her around and bent her over the dresser as she yelled “stop this is rape.”

During the attack, the girl said someone pulled up outside and “honked” a horn then everyone took off running, according to reports.

On April 22, 2014 Detective Dice met with witnesses in an attempt to continue to try and identify “MJ.” It was learned that “MJ” had previously attended North Marion High School and played on the football team. That is when Detective Dice was able to identify “MJ” as being Michael Hughes. Hughes was also identified as a person that frequently plays basketball at local basketball courts.

A photo lineup was presented to the 11-year-old and she identified Michael Hughes as the rapist.

On April 28, 2014 Detective Dice located Hughes and conducted an interview with him. Hughes denied raping the 11-year-old and told Detective Dice that [he] was in Gainesville at the time of the incident.

A warrant for Hughes’ cell phone records was then obtained. Hughes’ cell phone records place him in Ocala at the time of the incident.

Hughes was arrested On May 5, 2014 and transported to the Marion County Jail.

He is charged with Capital Sexual Battery on a Juvenile Under the Age of 12.

Detectives would like to know what you know about Hughes’ contact with children. If you have details about Hughes, please call (352) 368-3545. Newly released details in tragic I-75 accident & funeral arrangements

    I-75 accident in Ocala, Florida
    I-75 accident in Ocala, Florida

Ocala, Florida — Florida Highway Patrol investigators continue to piece together the events that led to a multiple car crash on Saturday, May 3, 2014, on I-75 in Ocala, Florida that killed three people.

Trooper Chelsea Richard was completing a single-vehicle crash investigation in the center median when a truck driven by Troy T. Owens, 22, of Ocala traveled into the median striking Trooper Richard, Mr. John Duggan and Mr. Robert Phillips. Trooper Richard and Mr. Duggan were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mr. Phillips expired later that evening at Ocala Regional Medical Center.

John Lindecamp, 30, was traveling southbound on I-75 in the center lane. Owens was traveling southbound on I-75 in the inside lane. Richard’s patrol car, a 2004 Chevy pickup driven by 17-year-old Hannah Bartlett and Duggan’s tow truck were parked on the inside emergency lane due to the previous traffic crash.

Lindencamp abruptly applied his brakes due to stopped traffic, causing his 2006 Mercury SUV to slide sideways into the inside lane. Owens, who was driving a 2005 Ford pickup then sideswiped Lindencamp and was redirected onto the median. Owens’ vehicle traveled southeast between the parked cars and the guardrail. Owens’ vehicle struck Richard’s patrol car, Bartlett’s 2004 Chevy pickup, Richard, Phillips, Duggan and then the tow truck, in that approximate order. Owens’ vehicle came to rest south of the tow truck on the eastern grassy shoulder and an emergency lane.

Phillips had arrived on the scene with his wife after receiving a phone call from his daughter telling them she had been in an accident. Shortly after arriving, Phillips told his wife and daughter to leave since he felt it was unsafe for them to be at the accident scene. Phillips stayed behind to wait with his daughter’s friend, Bartlett. Phillips was waiting for her truck to be loaded onto the tow truck when tragedy struck.

“This accident investigation is very complicated and the homicide portion of the investigation will take time, said Sergeant Tracy Hisler-Pace, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol. “This is a very tragic situation for everyone involved and FHP thanks everyone for their patience during this trying time.”

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida “Move Over Law” is being ignored by drivers.

Sergeant Kim Montes with FHP said, “Drivers today are too distracted. It’s too late to be sorry after something like this happens. People are always sorry and feel bad when they cause someone else’s death and it’s too late; you should be doing something to prevent it.”

Troopers said it is simple, when you see flashing lights, move over, and if you can’t move over you are required by law to reduce your speed by 20 mph below the posted speed limit. The law pertains to all emergency vehicles and roadside workers. Troopers also said that in light of the recent tragedies, enforcement of the Florida “Move Over Law” will be in full effect.

Ocala Post spoke with Sergeant Tracy Hisler-Pace several times today and during those conversations, it was learned that this investigation is extremely complicated, and has touched many lives.

The family, as well as FHP, are asking the public and media not to speculate on this case prior to the facts being determined.

The funeral for Trooper Chelsea Richard will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014, at First Baptist Church, 2801 SE Maricamp Road (SR-464). Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, also at the church.

Flowers can be sent to the church.

The family is currently working on setting up a trust fund.

One southbound lane is now open. FHP will continue to investigate the scene as traffic slowly clears.

Ocala Post cannot release the names of the deceased at this time.

    [Updated at 12:11 a.m. on May 4, 2014]

During a press conference tonight, the identities of those killed and injured in Saturday’s tragic crash were released. Ocala Post had previously not released information that was received in a tip, out of respect for the families; fearing notification of next of kin had not been made.

The Florida Highway Patrol Trooper has been identified as Chelsea Renee Richard, 30, and the tow truck driver, who reportedly worked for Duggan Towing in Ocala, was identified as John Duggan. The injured man, George Robert Phillips, was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he is currently still listed in critical condition.

Traffic was at a standstill for nearly eight (8) hours on Saturday. Drivers were stuck in their vehicles and children grew anxious as the hours passed, said officials.

Officials said this is a very complicated accident involving a total of seven vehicles and will take investigators time to sort out all of the details. Sergeant Tracy Hisler-Pace, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol, said she would not speculate on many of the questions that have been left unanswered.

Richard was a nine (9) year veteran of the FHP and was described as a loving mother that has left behind a 4-year-old son.

As Sergeant Hisler-Pace described Richard, it could be heard in her voice that she was trying to hold back her tears.

“This is a tragic day for the state of Florida and for the men and women of the Florida Highway Patrol,” said FHP Director Colonel David Brierton.

Further information on Duggan and Phillips was not immediately available to Ocala Post.

FHP also would not release any information in regards to the driver that caused the deaths of two innocent people and badly injured another. Officials did say that they do not believe alcohol was a factor, however, it has not been officially ruled out.

This is a sad situation for those that lost their lives, the injured, as well as all family members that are left with so many unanswered questions. Tonight, these families will go to bed not knowing, and without their loved ones.

Curfew: OPD Reminds Parents; Keep Your Kids Off The Streets Or Face Fines

    Ocala Florida Curfew
    Ocala, Florida Curfew

Ocala, Florida — The Ocala Police Department says they have been experiencing problems with minors late at night on the weekends at Wal-Mart on Easy Street and other surrounding businesses.

On April 26, 2014, multiple officers were dispatched to Wal-Mart and the McDonald’s across the street due to large groups of minors causing disturbances.

There was no adult supervision present and their behavior was disruptive to other patrons of the businesses as well as the business owners.

Once stopped and detained, parents were called to respond and take custody of their children.

Many parents could not pick up their children or simply didn’t care enough to arrive prior to the close of business at McDonald’s, therefore the minors had to be transported to OPD headquarters to await pickup.

The Ocala Police Department wants to remind the community that there is a curfew law (State Law) that the City of Ocala has adopted for minors and that the law holds the parents responsible for making sure their child/children don’t violate this law.

Minors prohibited in public places and establishments during certain hours; penalty; procedure:

    • (1)(a) A minor may not be or remain in a public place or establishment between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. of the following day, Sunday through Thursday, except in the case of a legal holiday.
    • (b) A minor may not be or remain in a public place or establishment between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays.
    • (2) A minor who has been suspended or expelled from school may not be or remain in a public place, in an establishment, or within 1,000 feet of a school during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during any school day.
    • (3) A minor who violates this section shall receive a written warning for her or his first violation. A minor who violates this section after having received a prior written warning is guilty of a civil infraction and shall pay a fine of $50 for each violation.
    • (4) If a minor violates a curfew and is taken into custody, the minor shall be transported immediately to a police station or to a facility operated by a religious, charitable, or civic organization that conducts a curfew program in cooperation with a local law enforcement agency. After recording pertinent information about the minor, the law enforcement agency shall attempt to contact the parent of the minor and, if successful, shall request that the parent take custody of the minor and shall release the minor to the parent.

Business owners have complained and said that they fear they will lose business if the kids continue to hang out and cause trouble. Many have expressed their concerns and said they feel this matter is a parenting issue. One local business owner Ocala Post called, said via phone, “These kids do not have any discipline. The child will act how the parent allows them to act, and if the parent doesn’t care or has been in trouble with the law themselves, then the apple usually doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Parents in Marion County are being asked to step up and take more responsibility for their children.

The curfew will be enforced, and fines will be issued if parents do not take appropriate measures.

The Ocala Police Department said, “We appreciate the cooperation from all parents and minors.”

But First…Let Me Take A Selfie

Palm Harbor, Florida — Brian Genest, 17, was visiting Chestnut Park with his mom, Paula Genest, in Palm Harbor, Florida when he saw a squirrel on the hand rail of the wooden walk way.

Genest approached the squirrel in hopes of capturing a few close up pictures.

Genest said when he got close enough to the squirrel, it actually reached out and tried to grab his phone.

Genest’s goal was to take a “selfie” with the squirrel, but when the camera flash went off, the squirrel freaked out he said.

The squirrel was clearly not up-to-date on “selfie” etiquette.

While mom stood and continued to snap photos, the squirrel jumped on Genest’s shoulder, ran under his shirt then ended up hanging off the back of his shirt.

Mom was able to take some good photos of the encounter with the furry attacker before Genest was finally able to remove the squirrel from his shirt.

Genest and the squirrel were not harmed during the funny encounter.

Genest said he and his mom had a good laugh.
