The owner of a popular waterside restaurant and two others, abused 15-year-old girl

DeLand, Florida — The comments of a 60-year-old DeLand man sparked an intensive investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

It all started when witnesses said the man offered to pay money if someone could introduce him to some young girls.

The investigation that culminated Wednesday morning led to three arrests, including a DeBary couple accused of turning a 15-year-old girl into a drug-addicted prostitute.

Robert Richards, the 60-year-old man whose troubling comments launched the investigation, also was arrested after it was discovered he paid for sex acts with the teenage girl on multiple occasions.

Investigators believe the sexual encounters sometimes took place in Richards’ home on Fatio Road, and other times at a DeLand restaurant he owned. The restaurant has since been shut down.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation back in June before the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force stepped in to take the lead role, with the Sheriff’s Office continuing to assist. The investigation ultimately led to a DeBary couple, 50-year-old Michael Graves and his 49-year-old wife, Cynthia Graves. Both are known prescription drug abusers. The investigation revealed that the money for their drugs came from prostituting the 15-year-old girl. The couple also is accused of plying the girl with prescription pain killers.

According to reports, the couple would coach the girl on how to cook and inject the drugs herself. Other times, they would inject the drugs into the girl. When investigators interviewed the girl, now 16-years-old, they noticed that she had what appeared to be “track marks” on the top of her hand consistent with injecting drugs. She also acted groggy and wasn’t completely coherent.

Investigators interviewed several witnesses who confirmed that Richards was engaging in sex acts with the girl. One witness even said she drove Richards’ car while the girl was in the backseat performing oral sex on Richards. The investigation revealed that Cynthia Graves would drive the girl to meet Richards for sex. He would typically pay the girl between $60 to $80. Afterwards, the girl would then turn over the money to Cynthia Graves.

The sexual encounters sometimes took place at the now-defunct Fresh Off The Hook, a restaurant just west of DeLand owned by Richards. The trysts there would take place either before the restaurant opened or after it closed.

One witness told investigators that Richards paid her $100 for introducing him to Cynthia Graves. According to Richards, the two met at a bar in Orange City.

Investigators presented their findings on Tuesday, to Circuit Court Judge R. Michael Hutcheson, who issued arrest warrants for the three defendants. Roberts was arrested Wednesday morning at his residence, 1312 Fatio Road, DeLand. Investigators also executed a search warrant at his house.

Cynthia and Michael Graves were picked up Wednesday morning at their residence, 222 Angeles Road, DeBary. All three defendants have been booked into the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach.

Michael Graves was charged with Child Abuse and is being held on $15,000 bond. He has previous convictions for Trafficking Hydrocodone.

Cynthia Graves was charged with Procuring a Person under 18 for Prostitution, Deriving Support from the Proceeds of Prostitution, and Child abuse. She is being held on $30,000 bond. She has previous convictions for Trafficking Hydrocodone and Obtaining Prescriptions by Fraud. During her recent arrest, investigators said she was smug and didn’t think she did anything wrong.

Robert Richards was charged with Child Abuse and Lewd or Lascivious Battery (x2). He is being held on $30,000 bond.

People that knew Richards said he just seemed like a normal guy that served excellent food at his restaurant.

The Safe Streets Task Force, which includes a full time investigator from the Sheriff’s Office, is continuing its investigation. Agents are concerned that there could be additional victims who may have had sexual contact with Richards either at his home, or the now shuttered restaurant. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 386-668-3830.

Lecanto, Florida — Last week, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office held their annual “Shop with a Cop” event geared toward providing gifts for needy children.

The event was held at the Walmart in Lecanto.

While the Walmart was filled with deputies, a man wearing a red Santa hat entered the store and awkwardly attempted to blend in.

One of the deputies noticed the man, identified as Grant Scott Timm, 35, acting very suspicious. The deputy then notified a Walmart loss prevention associate.

Timm was observed removing meat from the meat cooler and walking to the bicycle area of the store. He then walked to the front of the store empty-handed and exited the store.

The deputy — who was in plain clothes — followed the man outside, sparked up a casual conversation, and asked for a cigarette. The deputy then showed the man his badge and identified himself.

The deputy asked Timm if he had purchased anything in the store, to which he replied, “No, but I stole some meat.” Timm then reached down the front of [his] pants and pulled out his meat. He produced a package of tenderloin steaks.

Timm stated, “We are hungry and don’t have any money.” Timm then pulled out a bicycle computer from the rear of his pants. He also pulled out a cigarette pack filled with methadone pills, which he did not have a prescription for.

Timm was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Retail Theft.

The methadone pills were securely wrapped and placed into evidence. The stolen merchandise was returned to Walmart.

Francis Marion Military Academy instructor sentenced to 80 years

Francis Marion Military Academy instructor, Duane Adams.

Ocala, Florida — Circuit Judge Jonathan Ohlman, sentenced former Francis Marion Military Academy instructor, Duane Adams, to 80-years in prison today for having a sexual relationship with one of his former students earlier this year. According to the State Attorney’s Office, he will serve a 20-year sentence for each his four counts of Sexual Battery that will run consecutive to one another. If he makes it out of prison, he will then be required to serve 10-years probation.

Adams, 55, who was arrested January 14, was found guilty on October 9.

Adams’ victim went missing on January 10. He was questioned, but denied knowing the whereabouts of the girl. She was located on January 13, at the Steak N’ Shake, 3800 SW College Road, Ocala.

Soon after, detectives learned Adams’ dark secret.

The girl told detectives she and Adams had consensual sex at [his] apartment multiple times, and that he treated her differently in school. He would also send her explicit text messages. She also told detectives she would occasionally accept money from Adams.

Adams also crossed over county lines to Volusia county, and had sex with the girl in a motel he had rented under a false name.

The girl did not want Adams to be arrested. She said she loved him and they had planned to get married in a different state when she turned 16. However, because she was under the age of 18, Florida law would not allow her to make that decision and prohibited her from consenting to sex.

Adams attempted many times to use the 20-years he spent in the military as protection, but in the end, it didn’t help.

Read the detailed articles on Adams’ arrest below.

Detective: “Rape should not be a crime” – Women being raped throws a state law in the spotlight

Citizens across the U.S., namely women, are talking about an Indiana law that allows for police officers to be shot. Some women want the law to be passed in states where sexual assaults by police officers on females have a high percentage rate, and they want the law to be extended to outside the home. Women say they are fed up with harassment from police as well as street criminals.

Two professors at Loyola University in New Orleans: Laura Hope and Erin Dupuis, led a march Saturday demanding police and other criminals be held accountable. Although organizers said they do not wish violence on law enforcement, they do want the entire New Orleans Police Department dismantled.

An inquiry by New Orleans Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux’s office, discovered serious problems with special victims units at the NOPD following hundreds of complains from women. Complaints poured in after a woman that was brutally raped and beaten during Mardi Gras, was told by detectives her case would not be investigated.

According to the IG, police and detectives in New Orleans failed to investigate 86 percent of sexual assault crimes against women from 2011 to 2014 — most didn’t even file a formal report. Many of the cases were brutal rapes, or women that had been drugged at a bar and then sexually assaulted. Quatrevaux said the numbers are sickening and police should be ashamed of themselves.

kill cops, cop killer, ocala news, police brutality, rape

The IG said in some instances in the cases he reviewed, there was DNA evidence. He said those cases were also ignored. He also said they are not just reviewing one or two cases. He said it is so sickening because it is such a large amount of cases.

When detectives were questioned and asked why the cases were not investigated, one of the detectives replied, “Simple rape should not be a crime.” Organizers expressed their concerns with the detective’s statements. “If he does’t think it should be a crime, then maybe his background should be looked into,” they said. Implying that the detective had a history of assaulting women. According to New Orleans officials, the detective was fined and assigned to desk duty.

Professors said the problem is widespread and not just isolated to the New Orleans area. Organizers said, “It’s funny, police will arrest you for marijuana, but turn their heads when a woman is raped or assaulted by one of their own or by a criminal on the street. It’s absolutely disgusting.” They went on to say, “If we didn’t bring this to the surface, it would go unnoticed.”

Hope said that, among other things, the people that marched Saturday wanted an external investigation of how Police Departments handle sexual assault cases. They will not be satisfied with the Police Department itself looking into how the Department is handling rape cases. “With regard to the public trust, to the extent it has been broken, you would think that would be one of the common sense things,” Hope said. “Maybe it’s a conflict of interest and ethically questionable for us to investigate ourselves. Apparently not.”

    The Law

The Indiana law that some are speaking about received national attention earlier this year following the slaying of two Las Vegas police officers.

Indiana police officers are upset over the law allowing residents to use deadly force against public servants, including law enforcement officers, who unlawfully enter homes.

The recent incidents in Ferguson and New York has also sparked talk about the law, and hundreds of websites have been formed in support of the law. Officials said even more troubling is the large number of supporters some of the websites have generated.

The law was signed by Republican Governor Mitch Daniels.

The law’s author, Republican state Senator Michael Young, said there have not been any cases [yet] in which people have used the law to justify shooting police.

He said that the term ‘public servant’ was added to clarify the law after a state Supreme Court ruling last year stated, “There is no right to reasonably resist unlawful entry by police officers.” The case was based on a man charged with assaulting an officer during a domestic-violence call.

Young cited a situation of a homeowner returning home to find a police officer raping his daughter. Under the court’s ruling, the homeowner could not touch the officer; he could only file a lawsuit later. Young said he devised the idea for the law after the court ruling.

Young said there have also been instances in which police officers have pulled over females for a traffic stop and sexually assaulted them. He said there is a case currently pending in Orlando, Florida, in which Orlando Police Officer Roderick Johnson sexually assaulted a woman, and then took her to jail afterward. Florida holds one of the top spots for officers sexually assaulting women; however, it is not just Indiana and Florida he said.

In Ohio, an officer actually left a woman for dead after he pulled her over and made sexual advances toward her. She turned him down so he attempted to kill her and make it look like a robbery. He “stomped” on her back, neck, and the back of her head. The officer thought the woman was dead, but she clung to life and was found by a passerby. The officer was eventually convicted after a footprint found on the victim’s back matched his shoes.

“There are bad legislators,” Young said. “There are bad clergy, bad doctors, bad teachers, and it’s these officers that we’re concerned about when they act outside their scope and duty that the individual ought to have a right to protect themselves.”

According to Republican State Representative Jud McMillin, the House sponsor, supporters tried to accommodate police by adding specific requirements that might justify force, and by replacing “law enforcement officer” in the original version with “public servant.”

Governor Mitch Daniels said police corruption has gotten out of hand. He said the state is beginning to see more and more situations in which officers are entering homes unlawfully and threatening homeowners. Homeowners are arrested and charged with resisting arrest when they fight back. “Citizens must be able to protect themselves,” he said.

He said in many cases, officers have entered the wrong houses unannounced while trying to serve warrants and shot an unarmed law abiding citizen after they were caught off guard and tried to fight back. In several cases, officers lied and stated they did announce themselves; however, many times, home surveillance footage has proved otherwise.

“The measure requires those using force to ‘reasonably believe’ a law-enforcement officer is acting illegally and that it’s needed to prevent ‘serious bodily injury,’” Daniels said.

Indiana is the first U.S. state to specifically allow force against officers, according to the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys in Washington, which represents prosecutors.

The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys said the Indiana law is actually an amendment to the Castle Doctrine law similar to Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. But it does not extend citizens the right to shoot law enforcement officers approaching their vehicle during a traffic stop, or while eating.

They said the law is intended to allow citizens to protect themselves from corrupt law enforcement officers and detour officers who are sworn to uphold the law from breaking the law. “Let’s not pretend like corruption is not happening.”

Although authorities are blaming the Indiana law for recent talks about other states following suit, Indiana lawmakers say they do not have plans to make any changes to the state law at this time.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement told Ocala Post they do not keep track of statistics involving officers who assault or sexually assault women.

Lawmakers in Florida have not yet been presented with any petitions requesting a bill similar to Indiana’s to be drafted.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and new Police Superintendent Michael Harrison have vowed to do better. However, organizers in New Orleans said they will not stop until the current police force has been revamped.

John Brantley III stepping down as Celtics’ head coach

Ocala, Florida — Trinity Catholic Celtics’ head football coach, John Brantley III, is stepping down and calling it a career as head coach of the Celtics. Brantley spent 11 years in the Celtics program with seven of them as the head coach. Brantley broke the news during the Celtics annual end of the year football banquet.

Brantley joined the Trinity Catholic football program as head coach of the Junior Varsity team in 2003 and slowly worked his way up to varsity assistant coach until he was named the Celtics third head coach in 2008.

Brantley helped solidify the Trinity Catholic football program as a state contender every year. During his time as head coach, Brantley helped the Celtics program win a state championship, reach another state championship game, and win every district game they played.

I had the honor to play for John Brantley III during his time as head coach of the Celtics. He was the type of coach that made playing the sport of football fun. He allowed his players to have fun but made sure everyone was focused when they needed to be. He made every win sweeter and uplifted the team after every loss. Brantley also had the most important quality any coach can have; he always put his players first. I am saddened by Brantley’s departure but I congratulate and thank him for everything he has done for the Trinity Catholic football program.

The former University of Florida quarterback said this is not the end of his involvement in football as he plans to continue his annual Brantley QB Camp.

Unique traffic stops bring drivers to tears

kansas city news, ocala news, police, positive news,

Kansas City, Missouri — The public usually only hears about the negative things when it comes to law enforcement. And while there are corrupt agencies and morally bankrupt law enforcement officers, there are also many that go above and beyond the call of duty. Many who know the true meaning of “Protect and Serve.”

These are the deputies and police officers that would selflessly help an old lady across the street, help a citizen change a tire, or assist a homeless person with obtaining food.

In recent months law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have really taken a beating, but it is what goes on behind the scenes so to speak, that really seems to matter to law abiding citizens.

Steve Hartman, with CBS News, was able to capture some of the good when an agency allowed cameras to follow them around during a “sting” operation.

With cooperation from CBS, Ocala Post has obtained that video.

The video captured, is worth a thousand words.

Officers then drove to Bailey’s home to investigate his claims. When they arrived, they were horrified. The dog’s ears had been completely sliced off and were sitting on a kitchen counter.

Bailey stated, “I was trying to make the dog look tough and I got carried away.”

According to reports, officers drove the injured puppy to Levy Animal Clinic, where the treating veterinarian, Dr. Robert Bullock, determined the pup would need immediate surgery to prevent the dog from suffering.

Bailey was booked into the Levy County jail and charged with Cruelty to Animals. He was later released on $3,000 bond.

The surgery went well and the dog is excepted to make a full recovery. It has since been placed in foster care.

School bus attendant assaulted autistic child during ride home

autistic, polk county news, ocala news, bus driver arrested, bus attendant arrested, beat autistic child
    Clara McGriff [Mugshot]
Polk City, Florida — Yesterday, December 10, 2014, Polk County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives arrested 52-year-old Clara McGriff, of Lake Wales, on a warrant charging her with one count Negligent Child Abuse (F-3).

McGriff is employed by the Polk County School Board as a school bus attendant, and has been charged with child abuse for physically assaulting a child on the bus.

Detectives said McGriff intentionally inflicted pain on the autistic child, and did so out of anger and frustration.

According to reports, the child was strapped in a special harness designed to limit movement during transport. Detectives said McGriff saw the child playing with the seat belt next to [him] and she became aggravated. She then snatched the seat belt from the child and struck him with it.

McGriff then returned to her seat. Moments later, the child started playing with the seat belt again, at which time McGriff jumped up from her seat and aggressively struck the child multiple times with a plastic water bottle.

McGriff then stood over the child yelling, “I’m tired of you.” The child then removed his shoe and tossed it in the seat behind him. McGriff grabbed the shoe and threw it at the child — striking him with it. The child then spit at McGriff.

McGriff grabbed the child’s arm, and with her free hand, struck him nine (9) times in the arm. McGriff then used her body weight to compress the child against the bus wall for approximately 40 seconds. She then yelled at the child, turned her back toward the child, and pushed herself backwards with her legs — again using her body weight to compress the child against the bus wall and window.

A short time later, the bus came to a stop and McGriff assisted another child off the bus. Before she exited the bus, she instructed another special-needs student to press the child up against the wall. Once McGriff returned to the bus, she again used her body weight and pressed the child against the bus wall.

The abuse continued until the child was dropped off at home.

McGriff denied the allegations; however, the entire incident was captured on the bus camera.

McGriff was booked into the Polk County Jail and will have a first appearance hearing on Friday.

Per FSS 119, the video cannot be released, as it would reveal the identity of the victim, as well as the other students on the bus.

Superintendent of Schools Kathryn M. LeRoy suspended McGriff without pay. She will also recommend her termination to the Polk County School Board at their meeting on January 20, 2015.

McGriff has the right to request a hearing before final action is taken by the Polk County School Board. McGriff, a bus attendant with an annual salary of $12,156, was hired on January 26, 2006.

She has one incident of prior discipline action in her personnel file for failing to give proper notice to use sick leave and be absent from work.

According to Polk County records, McGriff was arrested and charged with seven counts of check fraud in 2001.

Due to the recent events worldwide, and an incident involving an Orlando Police Officer battering a military veteran, approximately 100 protesters gathered in downtown Orlando in front of the Federal Building to express their concerns with excessive force used by Orlando Police Officers.

The protesters marched peacefully along Washington Street to Orange Avenue and throughout downtown.

Once the protesters arrived at Church Street, they staged a “Die In” for approximately 15 ½ minutes in front of the Amway Center. The protest was peaceful and no arrest were made.

The OPD officer that illegally arrested a military veteran then withheld the evidence, is still under investigation.

Juveniles now being held at the main jail

Ocala, Florida — The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has relocated juvenile offenders into the main jail in order to consolidate manpower and reduce overtime. The move will also provide more corrections officers to assist with the manpower shortage in the jail.

The juveniles will remain completely out of sight and sound of adult inmates at all times during their incarceration. Additionally, all juveniles will be booked and housed separately from adult inmates. There will be absolutely no contact with adult inmates.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, corrections officers who work with the juvenile inmates receive special training for dealing with juvenile offenders and use a lesser use-of-force continuum than is used for adult inmates. In addition, the officers watching over the juveniles are not relieved at any time during their shift by a corrections officer who has been monitoring adult inmates.

Many juveniles incarcerated at the Marion county Jail are serious violent offenders and housing them in the jail allows officers the ability to separate the juveniles from each other when needed. The facility is also more secure than the barracks that were previously used.

Sheriff Blair said the move will allow for expedited medical care of the juveniles and for an increased security response during emergency situations, thereby reducing the potential of injury to a juvenile or corrections staff.

The old building will not go to waste. MCSO will use the old facility for the housing, storage, and security of 80,000 pieces of evidence.

Sheriff Blair said he made these changes in order to make better and more efficient use of the resources available to the agency.

Ocala sign guy receives much deserved attention

Ocala, Florida — A sign spinner, known as David, is receiving a lot of attention today thanks to Phil Dirlam II.

David Turner, “the sign guy” holds advertising signs for The Getaway Deli in Ocala. David dresses up in different costumes and does it with a smile, well, if you could see his smile. His enthusiasm for his job has also brought smiles to many children as they pass by and see him in costume.

You have probably seen him standing on the sidewalk at 25th Avenue and State Road 40.

In an e-mail to Ocala Post, a member of David’s church wrote, “Doctors in Denver once told David that he would never walk again because he had Burkitt’s Lymphoma, but he decided that he would not spend his life in a wheelchair. In 2013, David hopped a bus with almost no money and landed in Ocala. He has been twirling a sign for the deli ever since. He truly is an amazing person with a huge heart and an amazing outlook on life.”

Laura Douglas Sager wrote, “We love this guy !! It sure makes waiting for the light a lot easier to handle when you’re in a rush. He has moves that’s for sure.”

Paige and Ben Roberts wrote, “I can’t order anything at the deli today, but Phil’s post has inspired me to give back a little something to David for making my family smile. We are so quick to complain that it is nice to be reminded of all of the good things people do in our little town and let them know that we do notice the little things!”

Alison West wrote, “You started an amazing good-feeling post ! Nice to see Ocalans’ doing kind things and making someone’s day.”

It all started when Dirlam posted a photo of David “the sign guy” on Ocala’s Word of Mouth Facebook page.

Dirlam wrote, “I think this dude is more locally known than some of the richest of Ocala.. I also think he is the highest paid sign holder in Ocala… Today is Sylvester, tomorrow may be Batman lol.”

The post has drawn an extraordinary amount of attention. So much so, that today, co-owner Nathaniel Thibodeaux, of The Getaway Deli wrote, “Well, there was a wonderful post on Ocala Word of Mouth today. It was about our sign holder, David. To give him the recognition that he obviously deserves, I’d like to show him the enthusiasm that the members of OWOM were expressing for the great job he does. Today, I’d like to give him 20% of the gross revenue from today’s sales. This will be to show him how much of a smile he puts on the faces of Ocala drivers. So, please join us in rewarding him with the best bonus from Ocala that we can. Thanks everyone.”

Sadly, it’s not often employees experience such appreciation from their employer. But the owner of The Getaway Deli, along with David, have certainly just brightened everyone’s spirit this holiday season.

Residents and OWOM members have latched on the positive post and have vowed to stop by the deli to not only show support for a local business, but to show support for David.

In an e-mail tip to Ocala Post about this story, a resident wrote, “In a town overridden with crime and government corruption, it is so nice to see something this positive. I will certainly have lunch at the deli on my break today.”

David is also involved with the community. When he is not holding signs for the deli, he volunteers his time at his church.

Holding a street sign might not be David’s dream job, but he never complains. He shows up for work every day, and takes it serious. Most importantly, he actually enjoys it.

“It turned out to be a very FUN day today because of the support you all showed for David, our beloved sign spinner. I know some people wanted to help raise money for our dancing Santa Cat but it was just too short of notice. So we have decided to extend the same offer through tomorrow & Friday. 20% of all sales will be given to David as a Christmas Bonus from Ocala Drivers:-) Also, it will allow us to be better prepared to serve YOU! — The Getaway Deli

Ladarian Allison [Mugshot] Family Dollar Robbery Suspect
Ocala, Florida — Ocala police have arrested Ladarian Labrenta Allison, 19, the teen responsible for an Ocala Family Dollar robbery last month.

He was picked up by an Ocala Police Department task force specifically geared toward catching violent criminals that are a hazard to the public, such as Allison.

Allison was a regular customer of the store. A victim told police that the suspect visited the store at least twice a day, walked around for several minutes, and would always purchase one Black & Mild cigar.

On November 29, Allison went to the Family Dollar at 810 NW 28th Street, jumped the counter, and struck a victim in the face with a handgun. According to reports, Allison was screaming, “Give me the f***ing money, give me the money.”

Allison forced the victim’s to get on their knees and face away from the suspect (toward the safe). He then yelled, “Do not look at me and open the safe.”

A victim told Allison that the safe was on a timer, to which Allison replied, “You’re a f***ing liar, open the safe.” When the victim again repeated that he could not open the safe, Allison yelled, “You’re f***ing lying, you are going to die today.”

The suspect then demanded the cash register be opened and forced one of the clerks to remove $730.00 in cash from the drawer.

In a recent interview with police, the victim’s stated that they feared for their life and have not been able to sleep since the incident.

Allison was arrested today and charged with Robbery with a Firearm and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.

He is currently being held on $60,000 bond.
