Rabies alert for parts of Marion County

Official Press Release — Ocala, Florida — The Florida Department of Health in Marion County has issued a rabies alert for Northwest Ocala/Marion County. This is in response to a bite from an infected cat on July 31.

This rabies alert is for 60 days and includes the following areas:

    • North U.S. Highway 27 to the north
    • West Highway 40 to the south
    • Northwest 80th Avenue to the east
    • Northwest 120th Avenue to the west

The public is asked to maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in the area. Domestic animals are at risk if they are not vaccinated; rabies is always a danger in wild animal populations. An animal with rabies could infect other wild or domestic animals that have not received a rabies vaccination. Alerts are designed to increase public awareness, but they should not give residents a false sense of security if their neighborhood has not been named in the alert.

Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and is fatal to humans and warm-blooded animals. The only treatment for human exposure to rabies is rabies-specific immune globulin and rabies immunization. Appropriate treatment started soon after the exposure will protect an exposed person from the disease.

Individuals who have been bitten or scratched by wild or domestic animals should seek medical attention and report the injury to the Florida Department of Health in Marion County at 352-629-0137. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek immediate veterinary assistance for the animal, and contact Marion County Animal Services at 352-671-8727.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

    • Avoid all contact with wildlife, particularly raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes. Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.
    • Teach children to never handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly.
    • Do not feed or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or trash.
    • Keep rabies vaccinations up-to-date for all pets.
    • Keep pets under direct supervision so they do not come into contact with wild animals.
    • Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, and other similar areas where they might encounter people and pets.

Spiny lobster regular recreational and commercial season

    0

spiny lobster season, ocala news, florida news, FWC

FWC – Today, spiny lobster regular recreational and commercial season begins.

The two-day sports season last week successfully wrapped up, and lobster lovers everywhere are now getting ready for the regular recreational and commercial season, which starts Aug. 6 and runs through March 31, 2018. This economically important season generates more than $1 million through the sales of more than 200,000 spiny lobster permits annually.

“Based on what we saw during the two-day mini-season last month, we look forward to successful recreational harvests as well as ample opportunities for Florida’s robust commercial fishing industry,” said FWC Chairman Brian Yablonski.

Planning on catching some of these tasty crustaceans? Here is what you need to know before you go.

    Where to harvest

Know where you can go. Lobster harvest is always prohibited in Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, Biscayne Bay-Card Sound Spiny Lobster Sanctuary, certain areas of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and no-take areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Visit MyFWC.com/Fishing and click on “Saltwater Fishing,” “Recreational Regulations,” “Lobster” and “Regulations for Recreational Harvest and Lobster Information for Monroe County” to learn more about areas in Monroe County that are open to spiny lobster harvest.

    Bag limits

Stick to the bag and possession limits so there will be enough lobsters for all your friends and family. The daily recreational bag and on-the-water possession limit are six spiny lobsters per person for all Florida waters.

    Size limit

No one wants a small lobster for dinner, and recently approved legislation specifies that each undersized spiny lobster found in a violator’s possession may be charged as a separate offense. In addition, recreational or commercial violators with 100 or more undersized spiny lobsters are to be charged with a third-degree felony. Remember to always check the size of lobster you catch. If the carapace length is not larger than 3 inches, it may not be harvested (see image on how to measure spiny lobster). For divers, measuring devices are required and lobsters must be measured while they are in the water.

    Egg-bearers

To protect the next generation and your future chances to have lobster for dinner, the harvest of egg-bearing females is prohibited. Egg-bearing lobsters have hundreds of thousands of eggs attached under the tail that is easily visible. While most lobsters have completed reproduction by the start of the fishing season, finding lobsters with eggs is common in July and August.

    Bully netting

Bully netting at night is a popular method of harvest. Keep in mind, bright lights and loud noise on the water late at night can be disruptive. Keep lights directed down and avoid shining lights at houses along the shoreline. Keep sound levels low when near shoreline residences. Bully netters have a right to fish but should be courteous of others by minimizing disruptions and not trespassing on private property.

    Whole condition

Bring a cooler big enough to hold the entire lobster. Spiny lobsters must remain in whole condition until they are brought to shore. Also, do not take spiny lobster with any device that might puncture, penetrate or crush its shell.

    Licenses and permits

Make sure to have the proper paperwork. A recreational saltwater fishing license and a spiny lobster permit are required to recreationally harvest spiny lobsters unless you are exempt from recreational license requirements. Information about these licenses and permits is available online at MyFWC.com/License or you may purchase your license today at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.

Dash cam video in chase that left three dead not released yet

fatal crash, high-speed chase, ocala news, marion county news

Dash cam video of a high-speed chase that left three dead has yet to be released.

The incident occurred on July 28, 2017.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that Jaquard Cuyler, 26, who was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta, was in the vicinity of the landfill on Baseline Road when a Marion County sheriff’s deputy said he saw the “suspicious vehicle” and attempted a traffic stop.

The deputy said he thought a wanted suspect may have been in the vehicle.

Cuyler refused to stop and a high-speed chase ensued.

According to FHP, Cuyler was traveling west on Southeast 132 Street Road at a high rate of speed and entered the intersection of US-301, while fleeing from the MCSO deputy.

A second vehicle, driven by Brittany Chmilarski, 29, was traveling north on US-301 and had also entered the intersection of Southeast 132 Street Road.

While being chased by the MCSO deputy, Cuyler ran a red light and T-boned the 2015 Lincoln driven by Chmilarski.

Chmilarski, and her passenger, Denise Allen, 57, were killed on impact.

Cuyler later died from his injuries.

A reader, Whitney Evans, wrote on Facebook, “I find it odd that an agency known for bragging about high-speed chases on their Facebook page did not post anything about this chase. Even if it was an ongoing investigation, MCSO would normally state that. Let’s hope the video is released. Or was the dash cam ‘not working?'”

Even though FHP says that the investigation is ongoing, MCSO said that they will not launch an internal investigation and immediately cleared deputies of any wrong doing.

FHP said that deputies claim they backed off of the pursuit just before entering the intersection.

Following the crash, the person who was originally suspected to be an occupant in the Jetta, was not.

It is not known why Cuyler fled from deputies.

Cuyler was arrested in 2014 for Possession of Cocaine and Marijuana.

We want to hear from you. Should high-speed chases be allowed?

Today, Governor Rick Scott issued an Executive Order declaring a state of emergency in 31 counties within the State of Florida in response to Tropical Storm Emily.

Tropical storm warnings are currently in effect for Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties. At this time, no evacuation orders have been issued.

The Florida National Guard is on standby.

Governor Scott said, “Earlier this morning, Tropical Depression Six was upgraded to Tropical Storm Emily and tropical storm warnings are currently in effect along Florida’s west coast. Upon learning of this tropical system from the National Hurricane Center, the State of Florida immediately engaged to prepare for any potential storm impacts. I have declared a state of emergency across 31 counties to ensure that every community has the resources they need, and that state, regional and local agencies can easily work together to keep people prepared during Tropical Storm Emily.”

“While this storm developed quickly overnight and will swiftly move across our state, storms can always develop rapidly and that is why is it so important to be prepared at the start of hurricane season. For helpful preparation resources, please visit FLGetAPlan.com. We will keep monitoring and issuing updates on Tropical Storm Emily as it moves across Florida today,” Scott said.

Tropical Storm Emily formed early Monday in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 45 miles west-southwest of Tampa, and made landfall hours later in southwest Florida.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Emily developed into a tropical storm at 8 a.m., just hours after forming as a tropical depression.

While Marion County is not included in the state of emergency, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected.

    Tara Swindle

An Ocala woman was arrested after she snatched a dog from its owner and fled the area.

Police say, Colby Parsons, the brother of Tara Mae Swindle, A.K.A Tara Parsons, died and the family could not afford to pay for his funeral.

According to reports, the girlfriend of the deceased sold a Chihuahua, which originally belonged to Tara, to pay for Colby’s burial.

Sometime after Colby’s funeral, Tara decided she wanted the dog back.

On July 10, the victim told police that a teenage girl came to her door to discuss some sort of petition. The victim told police that as she was signing the petition the girl began asking questions about the Chihuahua. The victim stated that the girl left after the petition was signed.

A few hours later, Tara, not known to the victim, showed up at her home with a five-year-old boy, later identified as Tara’s son.

According to the arrest affidavit, Tara told the victim that the petition she had signed was incomplete.

Tara then asked if her son could hold the Chihuahua because he had never seen one before.

Police said that when the victim handed the dog to the boy, Tara snatched it from him and took off running — leaving the boy behind.

Tara ran to the street and jumped into the backseat of a minivan, which was occupied by two teenagers–one boy and one girl. The female was driving.

Tara’s son entered the van shortly after.

The victim chased Tara to the van and attempted to retrieve the Chihuahua.

Police said that the side door to the minivan was still open when the victim leaned in to grab the dog.

Tara then told the driver to “take off.”

The victim was dragged more than 150 yards.

The victim told police that Tara told the driver  to “speed up.”  Tara then stated, “She will fall off or die.”

The victim told police that she was begging for the driver to stop the van as she was being dragged.

According to reports, the victim suffered bruising to her head, arms, and ribs.

On July 18 a warrant was issued for Tara’s arrest. She was located and arrested on July 26.

Tara refused to cooperate with police.

She was charged with Robbery by Sudden Snatching with a Deadly Weapon.

The 38-year-old is currently being held at the Marion County Jail on a $25,000 bond. Her next court date is slated for August 29.

The Chihuahua was returned to the victim.

    Willie Heaven

Ocala, Florida — A convicted felon and known drug dealer who stabbed his girlfriend approximately 20 times is scheduled to appear in court on August 22.

Ocala police say that Willie Fred Heaven, 30, who owns Heaven’s Lawn Care and Tree Service, arrived home drunk and stabbed his girlfriend and her ex-husband.

According to the arrest affidavit, Heaven lives with his girlfriend and her ex-husband, who is also employed by Heaven.

The ex-husband told police that Heaven came home “either high or drunk” and accused his girlfriend of having sex with him.

Police said that during the argument, Heaven retrieved a knife from his work truck and stabbed his employee once, and [his] girlfriend at least 20 times.

According to reports, the girlfriend was stabbed in chest, back, and arms.

The ex-husband denied having sexual contact with the girlfriend.

OPD Detective Jeff Hurst said that the girlfriend was not cooperative and would only say that she “was stabbed by a black man.”

During the investigation, detectives learned from the ex-husband that Heaven was angry with his girlfriend because she had given away his stash of crack cocaine. Just before stabbing her, Heaven held a knife to his girlfriend and told her that she “put him in debt.”

A warrant was issued for Heaven’s arrest and he was taken into custody on Sunday.

He was charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

On Wednesday, detectives said that they had learned that Heaven had severely beaten his girlfriend in the past. Detectives said that the woman fears for her life.

Heaven has been in and out of jail since he was a minor. He has an extensive arrest record with a history of violence and has served several prison sentences.

He is currently being held at the Marion County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

Detectives said that the case is still open and the investigation is ongoing.

Shark dragged behind boat, investigation underway

    [Last updated on July 26, 2017, at 5:05 p.m.]

    UPDATE

    Statement from Sarasota Slam:

“The Sarasota Slam is in NO WAY affiliated with the despicable
behavior in the video on social media. We do not want to give those individuals any more attention. They will be banned from our tournament. Rule #1 of the Slam has and always will be: “Sarasota Slam expects the highest level of integrity and sportsmanship from its participants.” Their names were already given to the proper authorities when we learned of the video. Thank you to all of our anglers who reached out to give their support and protect our tournament.”

FWC officials said they are not releasing the names of the suspects at this time.

On Wednesday, FWC released the following statement:

“We want to thank YOU! An overwhelming number of calls, emails, social media messages and posts have been received in response to our request for information about a disturbing video of individuals dragging a shark behind a boat. Our Division of Law Enforcement has now identified the individuals in the video, and are currently conducting an investigation into this incident. Since the investigation is active, we can’t confirm the identities of the individuals, and it is too early to speculate as to what, if any, violations took place in this incident. However, we would like to state that the lack of respect shown in this video for our precious natural resources is disheartening and disturbing, and is not representative of conservation-minded anglers around the world.”

Several readers have identified one of the individuals in the Facebook comments.

    Original story

Florida — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is asking for the public’s help in identifying the individuals responsible for pulling a shark behind a boat.

FWC Public Information Coordinator Rob Klepper said, “The FWC takes this very seriously and is currently investigating this incident. We are also attempting to identify the individuals in the video and where it took place.”

“It is too early to speculate as to what, if any, violations took place in this incident,” Klepper said.

However, officials did say that one of the men in the video can be heard saying “look, he’s almost already dead.”

The video clip shows fisherman driving a boat dragging a shark through the water at a high rate of speed.

Officials said the men seem to be enjoying watching the shark “flop around.”

Klepper said anyone with information is asked to contact the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922 or Tip@MyFWC.com. Anonymity is guaranteed.

Man shoots AT&T trucks, fired shot at worker

A Hialeah man, 64, was arrested and charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and two counts of Felony Vandalism.

One of the workers captured the incident on video. The man fired the revolver until it was empty, reloaded, and then continued to fire the weapon.

Jorge Jove told police that he did not like the AT&T utility trucks being parked in front of his Hialeah home, located in the 600 block of Southeast Fifth Place.

Jove said he was worried that the truck would damage his driveway pavers.

When the workers refused to move their trucks, Jove went to his house and retrieved his .357 revolver.

Jove then shot the tires, radiators, and body of the trucks.

Hialeah police Sgt. Carl Zogby said, “He flattened their tires. He shot into the bodies of the trucks. He shot out one of the radiators of a truck.”

Jove said, “I just went bananas.”

According to the arrest affidavit, a Hialeah police sergeant who responded to the scene witnessed Jove fire one shot at one of the AT&T workers who was working on a cable while elevated inside a bucket of one of the trucks.

Jove was released Thursday on a $30,000 bond.

Jove caused more than $1,000 in damages.

    No one was injured.

Coffee recall: The best part of getting up, is Viagra in your cup…

    4

Were you feeling a little stiff this morning? A coffee that is sure to “get men up” in the morning, is being recalled.

FDA laboratory analysis allegedly confirmed that Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee (strong man coffee) contains desmethyl carbodenafil. Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED).

The FDA says that this undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.

The coffee, which is approximately $16 for five single-cup packs, has been marketed by many health food stores as a male enhancement herb.

Sellers of the product say that the FDA is simply trying to prevent the makers of Viagra from losing money.

Men who drink this product for breakfast and experience an erection until lunchtime should consult a doctor.

The coffee can still be found here.

We want to hear from you. What do you think about the recall?

I-75 accident kills band member, injures six others

Micanopy, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol said one person was killed and six others injured Friday following a crash on Interstate 75 in Micanopy, near Mile Marker 372.

A motor home, driven by Jason McCole, 41, of Wilksbarre, PA, and a GMC van, driven by Jordan Cannata, 27, of West Babylon, NY, were traveling southbound on I-75 when the motor home got a flat tire and had to pull onto the shoulder.

The van was also pulling a covered trailer.

According to FHP, a 2014 Peterbilt semi, driven by Robert Edwin Haines, 59, veered off the roadway and slammed into the motor home and van.

The motor home burst into flames, and the passenger who has not been named, was killed.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office said that the occupants of the motor home and van were with the heavy metal band, Adrenaline Mob. They were on their way to do a show in St. Petersburg.

WARNING: Bank account alert, U Travel Guide deducting hundreds from accounts

U Travel Guide/Global Service Group, u travel guide scam, ocala post, ocala news, marion county news,

Ocala, Florida — An Ocala man awoke Thursday morning to find his bank account had been targeted by thieves. He said he knew right away he had been scammed by a fraudulent company.

The company, listed as U Travel Guide/Global Service Group, had deducted $399 from the victim’s account using his checking account and routing numbers.

The “company” created a fraudulent check, but had printed the victim’s information on the check and presented it to his bank. The fraudulent check was drawn on Texas Bank.

Bank of America (the victim’s bank), said they have reversed the funds and advised the customer to immediately close his account.

U Travel Guide/Global Service Group has targeted consumers in numerous states. However, most of the victims have been in Florida.

Ocala Post reached out to the Attorney General Offices in Florida and Texas to see if there had been any consumer complaints filed against U Travel Guide/Global Service Group.

Kayleigh Lovvorn, with the Media Relations Communication Division at the Austin, Texas, AG office released the following statement:

“We currently have one complaint against U Travel Guide. We do encourage anyone who may have a complaint to contact our office. To file a complaint, consumers can use this link on the OAG website: https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/cpd/file-a-consumer-complaint. Consumer complaints filed with this agency may form the basis for an investigation into a company’s business practices and, in some cases, significant numbers of complaints may give rise to legal action.”

U Travel Guide/Global Service Group lists their customer service number as 800-391-8372. The number is actually for an answering service. Their website is www.u-travelguide.com, with a physical address of 17690 NW 78th Ave. Hialeah, FL 33015.

Ocala Post called the answering service number and spoke with a woman who identified herself as Marie. And for only being an “answering service,” Marie had a lot to say.

Marie claimed that the $399 deducted from consumers’ accounts was for an incentive offered through Costco and Sam’s Club. She said the incentive started out as a free offer, but when that free offer expires, consumers are charged $399. Marie could not explain the details of the so-called incentive.

Coincidentally, on the front page of U Travel’s website reads, “Your dream vacation starting at $399,” the exact amount deducted from bank accounts.

The Ocala victim, who is elderly, does not drive nor does he have an account with Costco or Sam’s Club.

Ocala Post contacted the Finance and Administrative Services Department in Seattle, Washington, where Costco is registered. Ocala Post was then able to obtain a phone number for Costco’s headquarters and speak to a live person. However, a secretary stated that the director was not available to comment.

Sam’s Club could not be reached for comment.

In all of the cases, victims stated that they had no idea how U Travel Guide/Global Service Group had obtained their checking account information.

If you have been a victim of U Travel Guide/Global Service Group, you are urged to contact your financial institution and then file a complaint with the AG. You can file a complaint here. In some cases, a financial institution may require consumers to file a police report.
