Lionfish invasion; know the facts, not the myth

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) made several changes on June 18, 2014, a meeting in Fort Myers meant to help combat the Lionfish invasion in Florida waters.

Lionfish are an invasive species that have a negative impact on native wildlife and habitat.

In 2013, a Lionfish was caught in Brevard County over Labor Day Weekend at Port Canaveral’s Jetty Park.

Approved changes in regards to the Lionfish go into effect August 1, 2014, and include:

    • Prohibiting the importation of live Lionfish;
    • Allowing the harvest of lionfish when diving with a rebreather, a device that recycles air and allows divers to remain in the water for longer periods of time; and
    • Allowing participants in approved tournaments and other organized events to spear Lionfish or other invasive species in areas where spearfishing is not allowed. This will be done through a permitting system.

“Changes like these will make it easier for divers to remove Lionfish from Florida waters and will help prevent additional introductions of Lionfish into marine habitats,” said State Rep. Holly Raschein, who has been proactive in the Lionfish-control efforts.

From outreach and education to regulatory changes, controlling the Lionfish population has been a priority for FWC staff. In 2013, they hosted the first-ever Lionfish Summit, which brought together various stakeholders from the public as well as management and research fields to discuss the issues and brainstorm solutions. These changes were inspired in part by discussions at the Lionfish Summit.

FWC officials say the fish are venomous and they need to be kept under control or they will kill off other native fish and marine life. FWC encourages fishermen to kill the fish and discard them.

Lionfish can, in fact, be harmful to reefs and endanger other marine life because they are considered to be at the top of the food chain.

There are, however, some facts the public should be aware of when it comes to the Lionfish. Recently, researchers for National Geographic said the public has been grossly misinformed on several key aspects in regards to the Lionfish.

Poisonous Myth – Versus – Venomous

    • There is a difference between poisonous and venomous. Lionfish are not poisonous, but in fact venomous. Lionfish have venomous spines in their dorsal fins, pelvic, and anal areas that can inject venom through a puncture wound they inflict on their prey. Lionfish are not poisonous – for the fact that – poison from a poisonous fish is delivered by ingesting it or secretion through the skin of its prey. Researchers for National Geographic say there is a clear difference between the two.

    Lionfish are Edible

    • Lionfish are in fact edible; despite what the public has been lead to believe. The meat of a Lionfish is white and extremely delicious said, researchers. Unlike poisonous fish that cannot be ingested, Lionfish are just the opposite. The spines must be cut off prior to eating, thus completely removing the venom. It is the same theory behind eating rattlesnake meat. Many restaurants throughout the U.S. have started listing Lionfish on their menus to promote public awareness while at the same time satisfying its customers. Lionfish have been deemed so tasty that they boast a price tag of $16 per pound, much higher than that of Red Snapper. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Center for Coastal Ocean Science, there have not been any reported cases in the U.S. from anyone being sick after eating a Lionfish that has been filleted and served up. If you have ever dined in a Caribbean restaurant and ordered seafood, chances are you may have eaten it and not even known.

    Limit on Lionfish

    * The FWC does not have any set legal-size or bag limits for Lionfish, says FWC Officer Lenny Salberg.

    How Can Lionfish Be Caught

Lionfish grow to be 15-16 inches long and usually hang out around reefs and is shallow water but can be found up to 1,000 feet deep. Because Lionfish are considered to be invasive to Florida reefs and other marine life, Lionfish can be caught by any means, says FWC Officer Lenny Salberg.

    • Hook
    • Spear
    • Net
    • Trap
    • Hands [Wearing proper protective gear]

In 2012, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration launched a campaign in order to try and get the population of Lionfish under control and at the same time educate the public.

The slogan for that campaign is “You have to Eat’Em to Beat’Em.”

    Daniel Lincoln [Mugshot]
Ocala, Florida — A 19-year-old Ocala man was arrested on June 20, 2014, after he intentionally tried to run down a family with his dirt bike.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, along with her four children, were attempting to move their golf cart when Daniel Lincoln came within inches of hitting them as he passed.

The victim told deputies that Lincoln then turned around, “sped-up” and drove directly toward them a second time. The victim stated that Lincoln swerved at the last minute as to avoid hitting the golf cart. The victims said as Lincoln was swerving, he yelled a racial slur at them, according to reports.

Fearing for her children’s safety, the victim drove the golf cart back to her home, according to reports.

Deputies said Lincoln then – on two separate occasions – drove by the victims house while giving her “the bird” and yelling obscenities.

The victim, as well as her children, stated that they were in fear of their lives, according to reports.

Upon questioning, Lincoln stated he did curse at the victims, but did not intend on hitting them with his dirt bike.

According to reports, Lincoln said that he hates the victim because she is always calling the cops every time he rides his dirt bike in the area.

Lincoln was transported to the Marion County jail and charged with Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon.

He was released on $2,000 bail shortly after his arrest.

    Louie McGowin [Mugshot]
Ocala, Florida — At approximately 6:50 a.m. Marion County Fire Rescue units arrived at the Dove Hill Subdivision in the 2800 block of NE 64th Lane to assist Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies with any potential medical/hazardous materials situations that could have arose from the standoff.

Upon arrival, a paramedic unit handled the elderly victim, whom lives alone with two cats.

According to an unnamed source, Louie McGowin, 56, forced his way inside the victims home this morning around 6:00 a.m. McGowin proceeded to tell her he had been watching her for a few days from an abandoned house caddy-corner to her home. She said that he had a history of abuse which is why she left him in the first place.

Neighbors originally called 911 when they heard “help me” screams coming from her house and saw her attempting to flee through the front door. McGowin then Grabbed her and pulled her back Inside the home. She was able to escape a short time later after opening the garage door and crawling under it. She advised the MCSO deputies that she had a Derringer pistol in her night stand which he may or may not have been aware of; which is what unnamed sources say prompted the response of so many units.

McGowin was arrested on February 24, 2014 and charged with Grand Larceny-Stealing $50,000 or More From an Elderly Person Over 65. The victim was 71-years-old at the time of McGowin’s arrest.

According to court records, McGowin failed to appear for a pre-trial conference on June 5, 2014; a bench warrant was issued for his arrest on the same day.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the victim stated that McGowin said he was going to kill her. She also reportedly informed deputies McGowin had an arrest warrant.

Sheriff Chris Blair said deputies confirmed the warrant and surrounded the house. When SWAT arrived on the scene, Blair said the Negotiations Team kept McGowin on the phone for nearly four (4) hours. Early in the conversation Blair said McGowin indicated he was armed and would shoot law enforcement if they attempted to enter the home.

McGowin was not found with a weapon in his possession during his arrest.

Two neighbors, who do not want to be named, told Ocala Post they have mixed feelings about the “military type” response through the normally quiet neighborhood. “I understand they have a job to do and need to protect deputies, but a part of me feels like it was a little much,” said one neighbor.

This is the third standoff with SWAT within just a few weeks. Sheriff Chris Blair said he cannot remember this ever happening in his 37-years of law enforcement experience.

McGowin faces charges of Aggravated Battery on a Person Over 65, Occupied Burglary With Assault or Battery, Kidnapping, Tampering With a Witness/Victim, Resisting Without Violence and Contempt of Court-Violation of a Domestic Violence Injunction. Additionally, he was arrested on the warrant for failure to appear.

Early indications are a man committed a violent crime then barricaded himself inside a home and is refusing to come out.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says they are attempting negotiations in hopes the suspect will surrender peacefully.

Due to Dustin Heathman shooting at MCSO’s armored vehicle at the beginning of June – causing damaged to the windshield – SWAT is without an armored vehicle. Alachua County has brought over their armored vehicle and rook to assist the Marion County Sheriff’s Office if needed.

The suspects is considered to be armed.

Mommy blogger poisons her son to gain blog traffic

Lacey Spears – Photo provided by the prosecutors office.

In June of 2011, Lacey Spears was investigated by the Florida Department of Children and Families after complaints of Spears medically neglecting her 2-year-old son, Garnett Spears.

Complaints also indicated Spears would slap her son for no reason with great force and, after the child would begin to cry she would then love on him.

Anonymous complaints to DCF stated that Spears would take Garnett swimming while his ears and face were bleeding as well as take him on road trips while “running” a high-grade fever.

DCF closed the case after classifying Garnett as being a “moderate risk.” DCF never followed up on Garnett.

In August of 2011, DCF received another complaint about Spears medically neglecting Garnett, but once again investigators closed the case without any follow up.

She was living in Clearwater, Florida when the first complaints were made.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2014, Spears, now 26, was arrested in White Plains, New York (Westchester County) and charged with Depraved Murder and Manslaughter for the death of her son, Garnett Spears.

Garnett, who died in January, was taken to the hospital in Rockland County on January 17, 2014. Spears told doctors that her son was having seizures. Two days later, Garnett’s sodium level rose to an extremely dangerous level.

While Garnett was in the hospital, Spears was sharing a room with him.

Authorities believe that while Spears was alone with her son she was injecting sodium into Garnett’s stomach tube. Garnett became critical and was transferred to the Westchester Medical Center where he became brain dead and passed away. He was only 5-years-old.

Garnett Spears’ life was short and plagued with illness. His medical records show persistent ear infections, unexplained fevers, seizures, weight loss and serious digestive issues.

Spears was running from child investigators. Every time a complaint was made; she would move. She moved from Alabama to Florida then New York. All the while, the “mommy blogger” was documenting her sons illnesses on Social media as well as her personal blog.

According to court documents obtained by Ocala Post, it was her blog that lead investigators to the truth.

Spears spent her sons entire life blogging about him. Investigators said that when Spears figured out that her blog traffic was increasing every time she spoke of her son or about something that happened to him, Spears, at that point, began to slowly poison Garnett. The abuse started when Garnett was just five days old.

Investigators said they became suspicious, so they began following every post on her blog. They said the lies slowly started to unravel and, the more they read, the more it appeared that Spears had been intentionally making her son sick.

Court records indicate that Spears searched the internet on the effects that high levels of salt can have on a person. Shortly after, she began giving her son high doses of salt.

Today, Prosecutors said that it is clear Spears poisoned her son to death and documented it for the sole purpose of gaining traffic to her blog, Facebook and Twitter account.

Her defense attorney is planning to use the defense of Munchausen syndrome and instructed Spears to plead not guilty.

Westchester Police Captain Christopher Calabrese, said that Spears did not show any emotion after she was arrested or in the courtroom. “She was kind of stoic when she came here. I think that she knew the grand jury was going on. She anticipated this happening, and she turned herself in with her attorney.”

Ocala Post contacted the Florida Department of Children and Families, but they refused to comment on the case.

If convicted, Spears could spend 25 years to life in prison.

She is being held without bond and has been placed on suicide watch.

    Pit bull theft suspect arrested

Adrian Anderson, ocala pit bull thefts
    Adrian Anderson [Mugshot]
Ocala, Florida — On June 16, 2014, Adrian Anderson, 22, of Ocala was charged with Burglary and Grand theft.

This case started on On Monday, June 10, 2014, when 17 pit bulls – two adult females – and 15 puppies – were stolen from a yard in the 7600 block of NW 49th Avenue. The victim told deputies that she left her home around 8 p.m. to eat and at approximately 9:15 p.m. the victims boyfriend noticed the dogs were gone from their pens.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2014, someone drove by the home where 17 pit bulls were stolen, and fired several shots into the home.

On the day of the shooting detectives received a tip that led them to a home along SE 66th Street in Ocala where Detectives say that Anderson delivered ten (10) of the 17 dogs.

An eyewitness told detectives that Anderson claimed the dogs as his own and wanted to keep the dogs on that property for an undetermined length of time. Detectives say they had enough evidence identifying the dogs as the animals stolen from the home along NW 49th Avenue.

Detectives called the rightful owners, whom then took possession of the ten (10) dogs.

A total of 29 pit bull puppies that have been stolen since May 21, 2014.

The puppies are either being stolen solely for the resale value or possibly to be sold and then trained for dog fighting, authorities said.

The combined estimated value of the 29 stolen pit bull puppies is $15,000.

In all instances of the thefts, victims had left their homes for just a few short hours. This most likely means that the suspect(s) are casing potential targets.

Many times, if they are able to, the suspect(s) will take photos prior to stealing the dogs. If you see anything suspicious, report it right away. Also, take down the license plate number of any suspicious or unfamiliar vehicle(s) in your area.

If you are someone breeding pit bulls for resale, you should be very wary of potential buyers that come to your home after responding to advertisements. Sellers posting puppies for sale on Craigslist should use extra caution.

On May 21, 2014, five pit bull puppies were stolen from inside an Ocala home. The thief is suspected to be someone that had previously shown interest in the puppies.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, they are still searching for the remaining seven (7) dogs stolen by Anderson, but there whereabouts at this time is unknown.

Detectives located Anderson at his home address and he was arrested.

Anderson was booked into the Marion County Jail just before 8 p.m., Monday, June 16, 2014. He was released on $12,000 bond just a few hours after being arrested.

Anderson has previously been arrested for Grand Larceny, Possession of Marijuana (multiple) and Violation of Probation.

This investigation is ongoing. Detectives are still investigating the shooting as well as the other pit bull thefts and they are not certain if the other crimes are in any way connected.

Anyone with information can call the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP, text a tip to 274637 using keyword 368-STOP, or visit www.ocalacrimestoppers.com.

Girl was left in hot truck for nearly 5 hours

Rockledge, Florida, baby left in truck dies
Father’s pickup truck at the scene

Rockledge, Florida — On June 16, 2014, a father arrived at the Fraternal Order Police around noon to begin his work shift.

Rockledge police said at around 4:45 p.m. they received a call about a 9-month-old child that was unresponsive after the father opened his truck and discovered his 9-month-old daughter inside. She was still strapped into her car seat.

According to police, the outside temperature was 89 degrees around noon. And according to experts, the temperature inside the truck most likely reached between 120-130 degrees during the late afternoon hours.

Witnesses told police they could hear the father screaming in horror when he realized his daughter was still strapped into her car seat, so they called 911.

The father was supposed to drop his daughter off at daycare, but had so much on his mind he forgot to do so, said police.

The little girl was in the truck for nearly five hours police said.

Lieutenant Donna Seyferth with the Rockledge Police Department, said officers that arrived on the scene desperately tried to revive the girl while waiting for paramedics. She said once paramedics arrived they attempted every measure they could, but unfortunately the 9-month-old could not be revived.

Rockledge police are calling this incident a horrible tragic accident.

Detectives said they have not yet filed charges against the father but the investigation is ongoing.

On September 9, gamers will be able to pick up the PlayStation 4 Destiny Bundle, which will pack in a white or “Glacier-White” PS4 (with the same specs as the original model, including the 500 GB hard drive), a white controller, a copy of Destiny, and 30 days of PlayStation Plus membership, which includes online multiplayer as well access to free games on the PlayStation Store. The price of the Destiny bundle is expected to go for at least $449 including a “Glacier-White” controller.

    Pac-Man

Late Tuesday, Nintendo executives battled using a forthcoming version of the “Super Smash Bros.” game. Revealed during the demonstration was the inclusion of Pac-Man as a character in the game. Pac-Man will be chomping away and firing fruits starting Oct. 3 on the Nintendo 3DS, and sometime this holiday season in high definition on the Wii U.

Lady Palutena, the goddess of light from the ages-old Kid Icarus series, will also be among the new character choices on the game.

Bringing the cult favorites to Super Smash Bros. serves as another nudge for Nintendo fans holding older consoles to upgrade to the Wii U, which has seen weak interest since launching in fall 2012.

    Ubisoft and women

You may have noticed the seventh version of the “Assassin’s Creed” series, “Unity,” feature doesn’t feature any female assassins.

According to developers, it was too much extra production work to include women.

Media outlets prompted the latest round of criticism of the video game industry for underrepresentation of women in games or its portrayal of women when they do appear.

    Paresh Dave

“Unity,” designed by Ubisoft, features a main character working with assassins “to expose the true powers behind” the 18th century French Revolution. The game is being heralded this week for including a cooperative multiplayer mode for the first time. The game launches October 28, 2014 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows computers.

Allowing users to take control of, say, a team of female assassins would have required double the work, Ubisoft creative director Alex Amancio told Polygon.

“It’s double the animations, it’s double the voices, all that stuff and double the visual assets,” Amancio said. “Especially because we have customizable assassins. It was really a lot of extra production work.”

Ubisoft technical director James Therien told VideoGamer.com that a female character was dropped from the feature list to focus on making the best experience possible.

And I mean it’s something the team really wanted, but we had to make a decision,” Therein said. “It’s unfortunate, but it’s a reality of game development.”

Gamespot noted that an Ubisoft official had earlier said, referring to a prior “Assassin’s Creed” version, that a heroine was not included because “the history of the American Revolution is the history of men.”

Some analysts and members of the video-gaming media are calling Sony the “winner” of E3 for pushing forward with plans to build a PlayStation ecosystem that involves access to the same games and content across the house on all types of devices.

In an extended interview with Edge-Online this week, Sony’s Andrew House explained how the company was adjusting marketing for the PlayStation Vita, which has faced a “challenging” environment outside of Japan.

A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers report on the industry said Vita sales saw an uptick when the PlayStation 4 was released last fall, but that “Sony’s dedicated portable consoles continue to struggle against both Nintendo and Smartphone and tablet gaming.” And even then, Nintendo has had to slash sales forecasts for its 3DS portable gaming device.

Smartphone, tablet and online gaming remain the video game industry’s fastest growing areas, with combined mobile and online gaming revenue on pace to surpass combined revenue from the traditional PC and console-game sectors in 2014, according to the report.

House, the chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, acknowledged that the Vita is more of an extender for the PlayStation 4 than a gaming device on its own. People can use the Vita when someone else wants to use the big television screen, he said. It’s a similar positioning for the Nintendo Wii U, whose controller has a screen that can be used for gaming when the television screen is tuned in elsewhere.

But House also said Sony has had success persuading mobile app developers to build games for the Vita.

It’s becoming a very accessible and easy onramp for independent developers, those who have had some success in the mobile space and now want to work on games that are that little bit richer, that have a more dedicated gaming interface,” he said. “And we’re certainly seeing Vita being embraced by that community very strongly.”

Plot to sue Florida prison system uncovered

    3

Columbia Correctional Institution , lake city
Kirk Cartwright [left] and Deshandre Billups
Lake City, Florida — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Tallahassee Regional Operations Center, charged seven individuals based upon a scheme by two inmates to sue the Florida Department of Corrections after self-inflicting gunshot wounds.

Five are in custody and two are at-large.

FDLE began its investigation on March 22, 2014, after two inmates were shot with a .25 caliber Beretta semi-automatic pistol inside Columbia Correctional Institution in Lake City. Inmates Kirk Cartwright, 33, and Deshandre Billups, 26, told investigators they were shot by an unknown person while praying inside their cell. However, investigators found that the inmates conspired to bring a gun into the prison through the mail, and shoot themselves with the intent of suing the prison system.

The investigation shows that inmates Cartwright and Billups smuggled contraband items into the prison without detection of Columbia CI staff. The pair routinely smuggled in cell phones and drugs they sold to other inmates or kept for themselves. Family members and friends of the two inmates, along with inmate Tony Underwood, 21, helped in the scheme.

Even though the inmates are know to smuggle items into the prison and all mail is supposedly screened prior to inmates receiving it, the guns still made their way into the hands of the inmates.

Inmate Kirk Cartwright – Investigators found that Cartwright conspired to obtain a gun inside Columbia CI, intentionally shoot himself and then sue Department of Corrections and seek to have his sentence reduced. Cartwright is currently serving a life sentence for murder.

Inmate Deshandre Billups – Investigators found that Billups conspired to obtain a gun inside Columbia CI, intentionally shoot himself and then sue Department of Corrections and seek to have his sentence reduced. Billups is serving a 20-year prison term for robbery with a deadly weapon and armed burglary.

    Both inmates are charged with:

    • Possession of a firearm inside a correctional facility;
    • Introduction of contraband into a correctional facility- unauthorized written communications, 10 counts;
    • Possession of contraband in a correctional facility- cellular phones, 10 counts;
    • Possession of a firearm by convicted felon; and
    • Possession of ammunition by convicted felon.

Additionally, inmate Billups is charged with possession of contraband-currency and inmate Cartwright is charged with introduction of contraband-controlled substances.

Inmate Underwood- Investigators found that inmate Underwood assisted in the distribution of contraband into Columbia CI. He is serving a six-year prison sentence for burglary and grand theft.

    Inmate Underwood is charged with:

    • Introduction of contraband into a correctional facility- unauthorized written communications, 10 counts; and
    • Possession of contraband in a correctional facility- cellular phones, 10 counts.

Joanne Billups, 46, –Investigators found that inmate Billups’ mother knowingly communicated with her son via cell phone and text messages and that she sent at least 10 text messages in the days before the shooting including one less than two hours before the incident. Billups was arrested this morning and booked into Hillsborough County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Ekecia Anderson, 21, – Investigators found that Anderson knowingly communicated with her boyfriend, inmate Underwood, via cell phone and text messages. An arrest warrant has been issued for Anderson.

Monique Thompson, 35, – Investigators found that Thompson knowingly communicated with her brother, inmate Cartwright, via cell phone and text messages. An arrest warrant has been issued for Thompson.

Billups, Anderson and Thompson are charged with unauthorized written communications with inmates, 10 counts each.

Katherine Landrum, 28, – Investigators found that inmate Cartwright’s girlfriend assisted with bringing contraband into Columbia CI. She is charged with 10 counts of introduction of contraband into a correctional facility-unauthorized written communications and introduction of contraband-controlled substances. Landrum was arrested this morning and booked into Duval County Jail on a $110,000 bond.

The Florida Department of Corrections is assisting FDLE with its investigation. The Office of the State Attorney, 3rd Judicial Circuit, is prosecuting this case.

The investigation is on-going and additional arrests and charges are anticipated.

Belleview mom arrested for attempting to suffocate two-year-old; released next day

Jessica Lehman, attempted to suffocate child
    Jessica Lehman [Mugshot]
Belleview, Florida — A Belleview woman that was arrested on June 11, 2014, for attempting to suffocate her daughter was released on $2,000 bond just a day later.

Jessica Lehman, 25, is accused of trying to suffocate her daughter nearly two years ago.

Belleview Police Department Detective Ray Dwyer, discovered Lehman’s crime after she filed false charges against the father alleging he sexually abused her now 4-year-old daughter.

While Dwyer was interviewing the father, it was determined that Lehman gave false statements to police. Additionally, the father told Dwyer a sinister story about Lehman intentionally trying to suffocate his daughter with a pillow, whom at the time, was only 2-years-old.

Kimberly’s Center for Child Protection found no indication the girl had ever been sexually abused.

Lehman admitted to placing a pillow over her daughters face for at least two minutes.

According to the police report, Lehman told Detective Dwyer that she was overwhelmed with being a mother and the baby would not stop crying. Lehman stated that she asked the father to help her, but he ignored her. According to Lehman, the father was too busy watching TV and smoking marijuana.

Lehman stated that she went back into the bedroom, got a pillow, then placed it over her daughters face; she was interrupted when the father entered the room, according to reports.

Following Lehman’s statements, she was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse (F).

Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 15, 2014 at 9 a.m.

It is unclear why the father did not report the crime two years ago. The investigation remains open at this time.

Victoria Wilcher now wears an eye patch due to losing vision in her right eye.

Jackson, Mississippi — KFC said it will donate $30,000 toward 3-year-old Victoria Wilcher’s medical bills after she was asked to leave a KFC restaurant because the scars on her face were disturbing to other patrons in the restaurant.

According to authorities, Victoria was attacked in April by three pit bulls while visiting her grandfather, Donald Mullins.

One of the pit bulls ripped open the front door to the Mullins’ home while two other pit bulls dragged Victoria into the backyard. While in the backyard the dogs shook her like a ragdoll, biting her as if they were trying to shred her apart and eat her like a piece of meat, according to reports.

According to reports, majority of the bites Victoria sustained were to her face.

Victoria has lost use of her right eye as well as the ability to move the right side of her face. In addition to the deep lacerations, Victoria also suffered a broken jaw and ribs as a result of the attack, according to authorities.

The three dogs that attacked Victoria were terminated. The grandfather, Donald Mullins, and his girlfriend were arrested and charged with Child Endangerment.

Victoria had just been released from the hospital after being there for a month recovering when her grandmother decided to take her to KFC for mashed potatoes due to Victoria’s soft food diet.

KFC spokesman Rick Maynard said, “The entire KFC family is behind Victoria.” Adding, “KFC has zero tolerance for any kind of hurtful or disrespectful actions toward our guests. We have been in touch with the family and are committed to doing something appropriate for this beautiful little girl and her family.”

The grandmother, Kelly Mullins, whom is divorced from Donald Mullins, said that Victoria heard the KFC employee ask [her] to leave because Victoria’s face was disruptive. Kelly stated that Victoria cried all the way home.

Kelly says Victoria used to be outgoing and social, but now she is so embarrassed and aware of her face that she will not even get out of the car in public places.

She’s 3 years old and she’s embarrassed about what she looks like. She’s embarrassed and I hate it because she shouldn’t be. It ain’t her fault,” said Kelly. “She won’t even look in the mirror anymore.”

The owner of the Jackson, Mississippi KFC where the incident took place said they are investigating and appropriate actions will be taken.

Attention Walmart shoppers; beware of self checkout kiosks

    Walmart self checkout scam

Consumers who shop at Walmart should pay extra close attention when using a self checkout kiosk.

Too often people rely on the capability and accuracy of technology; essentially making the human brain lazy when it comes to numbers & more specifically, numbers involving cash transactions.

Customers often times use self checkout due to the extremely long wait at Walmart checkout lines. Most have experienced the – one lane open – while the checkout line continues to “backup.”

Many consumers turn to the self checkout because a person’s time is important, and many are in a hurry to get out of the store.

Recent complaints to Ocala Post have revealed that self checkout kiosks at Walmart could potentially be scamming consumers out of thousands of dollars. Complaints indicated that while using two and three different methods of payment during a single transaction, customers were being overcharged.

Ocala Post put the accusations to the test; however, the accusations proved to be true.

    What to watch for

Although some kiosks will only allow one or two methods of payment per transaction; the following task was performed using three.

A consumer is at the self checkout; it’s time to pay and you want to use three different methods of payment.

The total purchase adds up to $78.85 and you have a gift card for $11.00 which would leave a balance of $67.85. You also have $30.00 in cash; leaving a total of $37.85 in which you want to pay using a credit card.

The consumer swipes the gift card valued at $11.00 then inserts $30.00 in cash at which point the kiosk screen reflects a remaining balance of $37.85. So, you then swipe your credit card. The screen shows $o.oo due and prints out a receipt, leaving you to believe that only the $37.85 has been charged.

After carefully inspecting the receipt you see that your credit card was actually charged $67.85 instead of $37.85. The receipt does not reflect the $30.00 in cash having ever been inserted into the machine, although it was reflected in the on-screen balance. Essentially, the kiosk has stolen $30.00 of your hard earned money.

Many do not check their receipts after leaving a self checkout kiosk because they have put their trust into a machine that is basically operated by a computer.

    Walmart notified

Two separate supervisors at two different local Walmart’s, of whom do not want to be identified, told Ocala Post that the self checkout kiosks malfunction a lot. And often times the customer does not realize they have been overcharged until they are already home or have checked their credit card balance.

Ocala Post contacted Walmart through their Facebook page and questioned the mistakes. Ocala Post’s question was deleted in less than two minutes with no further response from Walmart’s corporate office.

According to unnamed sources, Walmart began receiving multiple complaints in regards to the kiosks 2012. Some claim the malfunction is a “bug.” However, authorities said when the problem is allowed to continue after dozens of complains, it is no longer considered a bug.

If a Walmart self checkout kiosk scams 10 people a day, multiplied by number of stores and days in a week; the potential loss for consumers is quite large if the mistakes go unnoticed by the consumer. Moreover, if the shortage goes unnoticed by the customer, Walmart stands to profit hundreds and thousands of dollars from the mistakes.

Consumers should always check their receipts, even if it is a self checkout that is being utilized.

    Two cop killers dead

las vegas police shooting, kill cops, ok to shoot cops, ocala news, rape
Cop killers Jerad Miller [left] and Amanda Miller
Las Vegas — A husband and wife are dead following the slaying of two Las Vegas police officers, and now an Indiana law that allows citizens to shoot cops is making headlines.

Investigators say the reason the Indiana law received attention over a Las Vegas shooting was because Jerad Miller, 31 and Amanda Miller, 22, according to their online history, were huge supporters of the “cop killing law.” The shooters online trail included YouTube videos as well as interviews by media outlets during the Clive Bundy Ranch standoff, all pointing to the fact that the shooters – namely the husband – greatly disliked cops.

During a press conference, Las Vegas officials stated that this law originally made national news because the Las Vegas suspects, whom are husband and wife, left a long online trail, which more or less explained why they went on a shooting rampage. During their rampage they also ambushed two police officers at a CiCi’s pizza joint, killing both of them and killing another local man at a nearby Walmart.

Las Vegas Assistant Sheriff Kevin Mcmahill said, “They walked past our officers eating lunch in one of the booths, and immediately upon passing them, Jerad Miller pulled a hand gun out and shot Officer Soldo one time in the back of his head. Officer Soldo immediately succumb to his injuries, there was no further movement from him in the booth. At that time, Officer Beck immediately began to react when he was confronted with lethal gunfire from Jerad Miller. He was shot once in the throat area. What happened after that was, very quickly, Amanda Miller removed a handgun from her purse and both Jerad and Amanda Miller fired multiple shots into Officer Beck.”

“The entire incident at the CiCi’s was captured on video. When the firing ceased — the suspects pulled the officers out of the booth and on to the ground, where they placed a Gadsden flag, which is a ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ yellow flag, and threw a swastika on the body of Officer Beck,” Mcmahill said.

The Sheriff’s Office said the swastika was a statement directed toward law enforcement, basically stating that all law enforcement are Nazis.

The ordeal ended when the female suspect reportedly shot and killed her husband inside a Walmart, then killed herself.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office in Las Vegas issued a statement advising citizens to report anyone that makes anti-law enforcement statements that would indicate officers could possibly be killed.

Officials said the shooting in Las Vegas is a senseless tragedy and was committed by a felon with an agenda.

Although Law Vegas authorities are partly blaming the Indiana law for the Las Vegas shooting, Indiana lawmakers say they do not have plans to make any changes to the state law at this time.

Full moon on Friday the 13th

    0

    Friday the 13th full moon
A full moon will appear tonight, Friday the 13th.

For the first time in nearly a century, there will be a full moon rising tonight, Friday the 13th. And for some, superstitions of these two phenomena are very real.

The last time it happened was on October13, 2000, and it won’t occur again until August 13, 2049.

If you’re a selenophobic— people who fear the moon— or suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia—fear of Friday the 13th— you may not want to leave the house today.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Tilley said there was a pretty good chance skygazers will be able to catch a glimpse of the full moon, if skies stayed clear and they were willing to stay up past midnight.

Even though fear of Friday the 13th goes all the way back to medieval times the date is best known from the 1980 film, ‘FRIDAY THE 13TH.’ Jason – the main character featured in the sequel – was originally named Josh. However, the writer did not feel the name was “mean enough” to live up to the title so he decided to name him after a school bully whose name just happened to be Jason.

In the U.S. there are millions and millions of people who just want to stay home and not take any chances on either one of these – Friday the 13th or a full moon – and here they are both together.

    Happy Friday the 13th…….

Shots fired into Ocala home;pit bull puppies stolen

    stolen pit bulls, ocala news

Ocala, Florida — At approximately 3 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2014, someone drove by the home where 17 pit bulls puppies were stolen on Monday, and fired several shots into the home.

Bullets zipped through the home, hitting Taegren Jones, 31, in the hand and Taegren Jones Jr., 3, in the forearm as they were sleeping. Both were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

On Monday, the woman that reported the theft of the pit bulls recalled seeing a burgundy in color late 90’s vehicle parked outside her home.

The pit bull puppies were stolen from a yard in the 7600 block of NW 49th Avenue.

The victim told deputies that she left her home around 8 p.m. to eat and at approximately 9:15 p.m. the victims boyfriend noticed the dogs were gone from their pens.

The suspect(s) crossed a privacy fence into the victims backyard and made off with the puppies.

This theft makes a total of 29 pit bull puppies that have been stolen since May 21, 2014.

Ocala Post is not releasing further details of the shooting at this time.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Second horse tests positive for Eastern equine encephalitis infection

Eastern equine encephalitis infection, marion county, ocala news
    Eastern equine encephalitis infection

Ocala, Florida — The Florida Department of Health in Marion County today advised residents that a horse located about four miles east of Citra tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis infection.

This is the second horse to test positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis virus in Marion County. A horse in the Sparr area tested positive on April 22.

“This is the time of year when mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise,” said Dan Dooley, environmental administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Marion County. “Residents and visitors should take precautions to protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes.”

The Department reminds residents and visitors to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and to take basic precautions to help limit exposure.

To protect yourself from mosquitoes, you should remember to “Drain and Cover”:

    • DRAIN standing water to stop mosquitoes from multiplying.
    • Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots or any other containers where sprinkler or rain water has collected.
    • Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and other items that aren’t being used.
    • Empty and clean birdbaths and pet’s water bowls at least once or twice a week.
    • Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that don’t accumulate water.
    • Maintain swimming pools in good condition and appropriately chlorinated. Empty plastic swimming pools when not in use.
    • COVER skin with clothing or repellent.
    • Clothing—Wear shoes, socks and long pants and long-sleeves. This type of protection may be necessary for people who must work in areas where mosquitoes are present.
    • Repellent—Apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing.
    • Always use repellents according to the label. Repellents with DEET (N,N-diethyl-mtoluamide), picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535 are effective.
    • Use mosquito netting to protect children younger than 2 months old.
    • Repair broken screening on windows, doors, porches and patios.

    Tips on Repellent Use

    • Always read label directions carefully for the approved usage before you apply a repellent. Some repellents are not suitable for children.
    • Products with concentrations of up to 30 percent DEET are generally recommended. Other US Environmental Protection Agency-approved repellents contain picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. These products are generally available at local pharmacies. Look for active ingredients to be listed on the product label.
    • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin, or onto clothing, but not under clothing.
    • In protecting children, read label instructions to be sure the repellent is age-appropriate. According to the CDC, mosquito repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under the age of three years. DEET is not recommended on children younger than two months old.
    • Avoid applying repellents to the hands of children. Adults should apply repellent first to their own hands and then transfer it to the child’s skin and clothing.
    • If additional protection is necessary, apply a permethrin repellent directly to your clothing. Again, always follow the manufacturer’s directions.

For more information on what repellent is right for you, consider using the Environmental Protection Agency’s search tool to help you choose skin-applied repellent products:

    http://cfpub.epa.gov/oppref/insect/#searchform.

The Department continues to conduct statewide surveillance for mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus infections, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, Malaria and Dengue. Residents of Florida are encouraged to report dead birds via the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s site—www.myfwc.com/bird. For more information, visit the Department’s website at www.floridahealth.gov/diseases-and-conditions/mosquito-borne-diseases or call your local county health department.

Teen plotted to murder her family in Facebook message

    0

    Alabama news, Marissa Williams [Mugshot]
    Marissa Williams [Mugshot]
Tuscaloosa, Alabama — An Alabama teen who was unknowingly speaking to her aunt on Facebook about killing her family is now behind bars.

Marissa Williams, 19, has lived with her aunt in Fosters, Alabama since April 2014, and [she] would frequently invite men she met online over to get drunk and have sex with her.

Williams’ aunt did not approve of her social media habits and asked her to stop bringing men to the house for sex. Williams’ aunt also forbid her to attend parties with strangers she met online, according to court documents.

When Williams’ aunt asked her to stop her unacceptable behavior, Williams blocked her aunt from Facebook.

According to court documents, Williams’ aunt decided to create a Facebook profile for a fictional man that she named Tre ‘Topdog’ Ellis so that she could add Williams as a friend and chat with her. The woman hoped for a rare glimpse into her niece’s online activity and for an opportunity to teach Williams about the dangers of interacting with strangers online.

The setup did not take long to produce results, however, it was not the results Williams’ aunt was expecting. Williams began unknowingly talking to her aunt, posing as Ellis, in late May, and on the first day they interacted online, she gave the fictional boy her phone number and home address and asked him to come over and get drunk with her. She also offered to have sex with him if he would agree to pay her $50 cell phone bill.

Her plans grew increasingly intricate and sinister as time passed. According to the court documents, Williams told the fictional boy how to get into her aunt’s bedroom so he could kill her and the woman’s fiancé first, then she asked him to shoot her cousin and the family dog on the way out. Williams allegedly planned to pack her things in his car while ‘Tre’ murdered her family.

When the aunt read what Williams was asking the fictional boy to do, the aunt immediately called the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and asked for help.

Deputies arrived shortly after and interviewed Williams. Williams admitted to the murder plot but apologized and said she didn’t really mean for anyone to be killed. However, her apologies fell on deaf ears.

Williams was arrested and taken to the county jail. She is charged with the Solicitation of Murder. Williams is being held on a $30,000 bond.

According to reports, authorities told the aunt she did the right thing, citing if Williams solicited someone for murder once, she would most likely attempt it again.
